West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose Resigns Ahead of Assembly Elections
Kolkata, March 2026 : In a surprising political development ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, C. V. Ananda Bose on Thursday resigned from his position as the Governor of West Bengal. The resignation has sparked intense political discussion in the state, particularly given the timing of the move as preparations for the Assembly polls gather momentum.
According to sources, Bose submitted his resignation to the office of Droupadi Murmu while he was in New Delhi. At the time of filing the report, there had been no official confirmation from the Governor’s office regarding the reasons behind the sudden decision. However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed the development through a public statement.
Banerjee said that she was informed about Bose’s resignation by Amit Shah. According to the Chief Minister, Shah also conveyed that the current Governor of Tamil Nadu, R. N. Ravi, would be appointed as the new Governor of West Bengal.
However, it remains unclear whether Ravi will take charge as the acting Governor or be formally appointed to the position for the remainder of the tenure.
Reacting to the development, Banerjee expressed surprise and concern over the sudden resignation. In a statement posted on her social media account, she said the reasons behind Bose’s decision were not known to her at this stage.
“I am shocked and deeply concerned by the sudden news of the resignation of Shri C. V. Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal,” Banerjee said. She further suggested that the resignation could be linked to political developments in the run-up to the Assembly elections.
The Chief Minister alleged that the Governor might have been under pressure from the Union government. She claimed that such developments raised questions about the timing of the resignation and its possible political implications.
Banerjee also criticised the Centre for not consulting the state government regarding the proposed appointment of Ravi as the new Governor. She stated that the Union Home Minister informed her about the decision but did not seek her opinion beforehand.
According to the Chief Minister, such unilateral decisions weaken the established conventions of governance and undermine the federal structure of the country.
“The Centre must respect the principles of cooperative federalism and refrain from taking unilateral decisions that erode democratic conventions and the dignity of states,” Banerjee said in her statement.
Bose had assumed office as the Governor of West Bengal on November 17, 2022. His tenure was scheduled to continue until November 2027. With his resignation, he leaves the position nearly 20 months before completing his full term.
During his time as Governor, Bose frequently expressed strong views on several issues related to governance in the state. He often made public remarks criticising certain policies and decisions of the state government, which at times led to tensions between the Raj Bhavan and the state administration.
His tenure witnessed several instances of disagreement between the Governor’s office and the ruling state government, reflecting the often complex relationship between constitutional authorities and elected governments.
With the state preparing for crucial Assembly elections, Bose’s sudden departure adds a new dimension to the evolving political landscape in West Bengal. The expected appointment of a new Governor and the circumstances surrounding the resignation are likely to remain a subject of debate in the coming days, as political parties and observers closely watch developments in the state.
