India Edge England by 7 Runs in Run-Fest Thriller to Storm into T20 World Cup 2026 Final

Mumbai, March 2026 : In a breathtaking high-scoring contest at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, India national cricket team defeated England cricket team by seven runs in the second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, sealing a spot in the final after a pulsating clash that produced nearly 500 runs.

India posted a massive 253/7 in their 20 overs, riding on a spectacular knock from Sanju Samson and valuable contributions throughout the batting lineup. England responded with a spirited chase and were kept alive by a sensational century from Jacob Bethell, but ultimately fell short, finishing at 246/7.

With this victory, India will now face New Zealand national cricket team in the final to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Samson’s Explosive Knock Powers India

After England captain Jos Buttler opted to field first, India began aggressively. Abhishek Sharma struck two early boundaries but was dismissed for nine.

Samson then took charge of the innings. The wicketkeeper-batter launched a stunning assault on the England bowlers, bringing up a rapid half-century off just 26 balls. India surged to 67/1 in the powerplay as Samson dictated terms.

Ishan Kishan joined the fireworks with a quick cameo, smashing 39 off just 18 deliveries. The duo added a blistering 97 runs for the second wicket, putting England on the back foot.

Samson continued his dominance, smashing boundaries and towering sixes around the ground. His brilliant innings of 89 off 42 balls, featuring eight fours and seven sixes, equalled the highest score by an Indian batter in a T20 World Cup knockout match — matching Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 89 against the West Indies in the 2016 semi-final.

The onslaught ended when Samson was dismissed by Will Jacks in the 14th over with India on 160/3.

Late Blitz Takes India Past 250

The momentum did not slow down after Samson’s departure. Shivam Dube hammered 43 from 25 balls to maintain the scoring rate, while Suryakumar Yadav chipped in with a quick 11 from six deliveries.

In the final overs, Hardik Pandya produced a powerful cameo of 27 from 12 balls. Tilak Varma added the finishing touches with a breathtaking 21 off just seven balls, pushing India to a mammoth 253/7 — the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup knockout match.

Among England’s bowlers, Jacks stood out as the most effective with figures of 2/40.

England’s Bold Chase Led by Bethell

Chasing a daunting target of 254, England began aggressively but suffered an early setback when Phil Salt was dismissed in the second over by Pandya.

The Indian bowlers struck again soon after. Harry Brook was removed by Jasprit Bumrah, with Axar Patel completing a spectacular running catch.

Buttler attempted to rebuild with a brisk 25 before being dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy, leaving England at 64/3 inside the powerplay.

Tom Banton briefly injected momentum with a quickfire 17 from five balls, but Axar Patel ended his cameo.

Amid the falling wickets, Bethell produced a remarkable innings that nearly turned the match. The young left-hander unleashed an array of strokes, racing to a half-century in just 19 balls before bringing up a superb century.

Bethell smashed 105 from just 48 deliveries, keeping England firmly in the contest.

Crucial Partnership Keeps England Alive

Bethell found solid support from Will Jacks, who scored a lively 35 from 20 balls. Together, they added 77 runs in just 39 balls for the fifth wicket.

The partnership threatened to tilt the match in England’s favour before Jacks was dismissed in the 14th over. Axar Patel produced a brilliant relay catch with Dube near the boundary to remove the dangerous batter.

With five overs remaining, England needed 69 runs with five wickets in hand — setting up a tense finish.

Bumrah’s Tight Spell Seals Victory

India’s premier fast bowler Bumrah delivered a crucial spell under pressure. His two late overs conceded just 14 runs, slowing England’s charge at a decisive stage.

Pandya and Dube then defended 39 runs in the final two overs to secure a dramatic seven-run victory for India.

Bumrah finished with impressive figures of 2/33 from four overs.

Bumrah Reaches Historic Milestone

The match also marked a historic achievement for Bumrah. With his first wicket of the evening, the Indian pace spearhead reached 500 international wickets, becoming only the eighth Indian bowler to reach the landmark.

Since making his debut against Australia national cricket team in Sydney in 2016, Bumrah has established himself as one of the world’s premier fast bowlers.

He now boasts 234 wickets in Tests, 149 in ODIs, and 117 in T20 Internationals, joining legendary Indian bowlers such as Anil Kumble, Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh, Kapil Dev, Ravindra Jadeja, Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath in the elite 500-wicket club.

India Set for Final Clash

This victory marks India’s fourth appearance in a T20 World Cup final. The team previously lifted the trophy in 2007 and again in 2024, while finishing runners-up in 2014.

The stage is now set for a blockbuster final between India and New Zealand in Ahmedabad, promising another thrilling chapter in the tournament.

For the passionate crowd in Mumbai, Thursday’s encounter delivered everything — explosive batting, dramatic momentum shifts, and a nail-biting finish — as India edged past England in one of the most memorable T20 World Cup semi-finals ever played.
