ICAR-CIFRI Marks International Women’s Day, Emphasises Empowerment of Women Fish Farmers
Barrackpore, West Bengal; March 2026: The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) celebrated International Women’s Day on 08th March 2026 at its institute premises, highlighting the significant role of women in inland fisheries and aquaculture. The programme was organised in alignment with the United Nations’ declaration of 2026 as the “Year of Women Farmers”, recognising women’s increasing contribution to agriculture and allied sectors.
Women fisherfolk associated with fishing in Ganga river and wetland systems of West Bengal participated in the celebration. Addressing the gathering, the Director of the institute, Dr. Pradip Dey, emphasised the importance of recognising women’s contributions to the inland fisheries sector. He encouraged women fishers to actively engage in sustainable fisheries practices, responsible use of inland open-water resources, and strengthening fisheries-based livelihoods.
Dr. Dey also highlighted the role of women in addressing food and nutritional security and in contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to gender equality and poverty reduction. He reminded the participants of their rights and responsibilities in promoting equitable and sustainable development within fishing communities.

A brief presentation during the programme showcased the diverse roles played by women in fisheries activities, including fish culture in ponds, preparation of nets and gear, harvesting, processing, and marketing of fish. The presentation also emphasised that women’s participation in these activities is comparable to that of their male counterparts, although their contributions often remain under-recognised.
The voices of the participating women fisherfolk were also heard during the event, where they shared their experiences and expressed their aspirations for greater support, training, and opportunities in the fisheries sector. They were encouraged to remain closely associated with the institute for future capacity-building initiatives and livelihood support programmes.
The celebration underscored the need to acknowledge and strengthen women’s participation in inland fisheries. ICAR-CIFRI reaffirmed its commitment to supporting women fish farmers and fisherfolk through focused programmes in 2026, contributing to inclusive growth in the fisheries sector and aligning with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
