Iran Confirms Killing of Top Security Official Ali Larijani in Deadly Strikes
Tehran, March 2026 : Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has confirmed the death of its secretary Ali Larijani in an attack, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict in the region. According to reports by Tasnim news agency, Larijani was killed early Tuesday along with his son Morteza Larijani, senior security official Alireza Bayat, and several others.
In an official statement, the council paid tribute to Larijani’s long-standing contributions to Iran’s political and strategic framework, while calling for national unity in the face of mounting external threats. His death is seen as a major blow to Iran’s leadership amid rising hostilities.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed responsibility, stating that Israel had targeted and killed Larijani during ongoing strikes against Iran. The development comes amid intensifying military exchanges involving multiple actors in the region.
Separately, Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the death of Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basij volunteer force, in what it described as a joint US-Israeli strike. These high-profile casualties underscore the widening scope of the conflict.
The violence follows coordinated US-Israeli military operations launched on February 28, targeting Iranian assets. In response, Iran and its regional allies have carried out retaliatory attacks on Israeli and American interests across the Middle East, significantly raising fears of a broader confrontation.
Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions appear to have stalled. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has denied reports of any renewed contact with US representatives, including envoy Steve Witkoff. Meanwhile, reports suggest that Mojtaba Khamenei has rejected proposals aimed at reducing tensions or pursuing a ceasefire with the United States.
Amid the escalating conflict, the IRGC has also unveiled a new ballistic missile, “Haj Qasem,” named after slain commander Qassem Soleimani. The missile, described as precision-guided, was reportedly used against Israeli targets for the first time.
The developments signal a dangerous escalation in regional tensions, with diplomatic avenues narrowing and military actions intensifying across the Middle East.
