Iran Strike on Qatar Gas Hub Escalates Gulf Crisis, Disrupts Global Energy Supply

Doha, March 2026 : Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Thursday strongly condemned Iran’s missile strike on a key gas facility in the country, calling it “clear evidence” that Tehran’s claims of targeting only US interests in the region are unfounded.

“Iran has consistently claimed that its attacks are directed only at American interests,” the Prime Minister said. “But this claim is rejected and cannot be accepted. The attack on a natural gas facility in the State of Qatar clearly disproves it.”

The remarks came after Iranian missiles struck the Ras Laffan Industrial City on Wednesday evening, causing extensive damage and sending shockwaves through global energy markets. The facility, one of the largest gas processing hubs in the world, handles nearly one-fifth of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply, making the attack particularly significant.

According to QatarEnergy CEO Saad al-Kaabi, the strikes have disrupted around 17 per cent of Qatar’s LNG export capacity. He warned that the damage could result in an estimated annual revenue loss of $20 billion and threaten energy supplies to major markets in Europe and Asia.

Al-Kaabi revealed that two out of Qatar’s 14 LNG production trains and one of its two gas-to-liquids (GTL) facilities were hit in the attack. Due to the extent of the damage and the time required for repairs, approximately 12.8 million tonnes of LNG supply per year could remain disrupted for the next three to five years.

“I never imagined, even in my dreams, that Qatar—and this entire region—would face such an attack, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, and from a ‘brotherly’ Muslim nation,” he said, expressing shock over the incident.

The fallout from the attack is expected to extend beyond LNG. Qatar’s condensate exports are projected to decline by around 24 per cent, while liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shipments could drop by 13 per cent. Helium production is also expected to decrease by 14 per cent, and both naphtha and sulfur output may fall by around 6 per cent each, highlighting the broader impact on the country’s energy and industrial sectors.

The damaged facilities, which reportedly cost about $26 billion to build, are part of a critical production hub that had already been under strain due to earlier attacks. QatarEnergy has since declared force majeure on its LNG production, indicating its inability to meet contractual supply obligations due to circumstances beyond its control.

Al-Kaabi noted that long-term contracts—particularly with countries such as Italy, Belgium, South Korea, and China—could be affected, with force majeure clauses likely to be invoked for up to five years.

The escalation comes amid a wider regional conflict. Earlier on Wednesday, an Israeli strike reportedly targeted Iran’s South Pars gas field, prompting retaliatory actions by Tehran against energy infrastructure across the Gulf. In addition to the Qatar strike, drone attacks were reported on a refinery in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, and another facility in Kuwait, where a fire broke out following the assault.

The growing instability has raised alarms across the region. Following a high-level meeting in Saudi Arabia, several Arab and Islamic nations—including Qatar—jointly called on Iran to halt its aggressive actions and prevent further escalation.

Experts warn that continued attacks on critical energy infrastructure could have far-reaching consequences for global energy security, potentially driving up prices and disrupting supply chains worldwide. As tensions intensify, the Gulf region stands at a precarious crossroads, with diplomatic efforts now crucial to avoid a broader and more prolonged crisis.
