‘Skills Alongside Degrees Are Essential; Follow Tata’s Example in Entrepreneurship’ – Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan

Universities Must Preserve Innovation and Experimentation – Governor Jishnu Dev Varma

‘AI Living Lab’ Initiative Will Train Students to Solve Real Industry Problems – Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai, March 2026 : In today’s time, it is not enough for students to merely obtain a degree; it is essential that the degree translates into employment. Along with technical knowledge, possessing soft skills and the ability to adapt to changing technologies is considered the key to success. Young people aspiring to become entrepreneurs should follow the example of Ratan Tata. Tata is an excellent example of how to fulfill social responsibility along with earning profits. The progress of every individual contributes to the progress of society, the state, and ultimately the nation, said Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan.

He was speaking at the first convocation ceremony of the Ratan Tata Maharashtra State Skills University held at the Durbar Hall of Lok Bhavan. Present on the occasion were Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar, Minister for Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Vice Chancellor Dr. Apurva Palakar, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Chief Secretary of the Skills Department Manisha Verma, Skill Development Commissioner Dr. Amit Saini, Director of Vocational Education and Training Dr. Satish Suryavanshi, along with students of the university.

Vice President Radhakrishnan said that the graduates of the university’s first convocation have become part of history. These students have not only achieved academic success but will also mark a milestone in India’s journey to becoming a ‘global skill hub’. He stressed that curricula must be aligned with industry demands. Students should be prepared for global challenges by incorporating modern subjects such as artificial intelligence, robotics, green energy, and data analytics. He also cited Japan’s progress after World War II, noting that despite lacking natural resources, the country advanced due to hard work and discipline. He urged Indian youth to adopt the same dedication towards work.

He further said that aspiring entrepreneurs should look up to Ratan Tata as a role model, appreciating his determination through examples such as Mumbai’s power supply system. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has become the fifth-largest economy in the world and is rapidly moving towards the third position. He advised youth to take advantage of platforms like ‘Skill India’ and ‘PM-Daksh’. Receiving a degree does not mark the end of education; one must remain ready to learn throughout life. The world outside campuses is highly competitive, but with confidence and determination, success can be achieved.

Universities Must Foster Innovation – Governor Jishnu Dev Varma

Governor Jishnu Dev Varma said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized three important aspects—skilling, reskilling, and upskilling. The Ratan Tata Maharashtra State Skills University has the potential to contribute to all three. Modern universities must preserve innovation and experimentation. Education should also instill character and a sense of responsibility for sustainable progress. Graduation is not the end of education but the beginning of lifelong learning. The world students are entering is dynamic and constantly changing. Current geopolitical developments, including conflicts in the Middle East, are already impacting the global economy and livelihoods, making it essential for students to acquire diverse and relevant skills.

He added that establishing and nurturing a university requires vision, commitment, and collective effort. Until the 18th century, India was a global leader in trade due to its rich tradition of skills and craftsmanship. To regain that position, efforts in skill development and reskilling must be intensified.

‘AI Living Lab’ to Provide Practical Industry Training – Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that merely having a young population is not enough; it becomes a demographic dividend only when equipped with skills. It is essential to provide quality education, healthcare, and training in modern technologies such as AI and manufacturing. Recognizing this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Skill India’ movement, in which Maharashtra has taken a lead.

He noted that earlier capital was the most important factor, but now investors are drawn to regions with skilled human resources. Preparing skilled manpower to meet the challenges of artificial intelligence is crucial. Skill training must evolve continuously in line with industry needs. He appreciated the university’s ‘AI Living Lab’ initiative, which trains students to solve real-world industry problems.

The Chief Minister added that the university has trained 10,000 women in AI with the help of Microsoft. As the job market is rapidly changing, skill universities must remain flexible compared to traditional institutions. With India’s economy moving towards becoming the third largest in the world, there is a growing need for skill-trained youth. Maharashtra accounts for 31% of the country’s total foreign direct investment. If Maharashtra were a separate country, it would rank among the top 30 global economies. Agreements worth ₹30 lakh crore have recently been signed at the Davos summit, and the state is expected to surpass economies like the UAE and Singapore in the coming years. Maharashtra also leads in startups and unicorns.

Recognition of Students’ Efforts – Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar described the convocation as a historic occasion that honors students’ hard work and future aspirations. Maharashtra is the growth engine of the country, and both the central and state governments are working in that direction. She noted that ITIs are being modernized to be more employment-oriented and that new initiatives are expanding skill development opportunities across the state. She encouraged students to adapt to new technologies and uphold ethical values as they enter the global competitive environment.

Skill Development is the Backbone of Self-Reliant India – Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha

Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, efforts are being made to create a workforce capable of handling future technologies. In ancient times, India was called the “golden bird” not only because of agriculture but also due to the skills present in every household. Reviving that tradition is essential. He added that strong law and order and administration in Maharashtra will further boost progress in the skill sector.

The university, named after the late Ratan Tata, aims to preserve not only technical education but also values. He also highlighted recognition given to top ITIs and contributions of individuals in skill development and innovation.

Over 25,000 Students Awarded Degrees – Vice Chancellor Dr. Apurva Palakar

Vice Chancellor Dr. Apurva Palakar stated that more than 25,000 students received certificates and degrees at the first convocation, marking a major milestone. The university has trained 10,000 women in artificial intelligence and secured a ₹17 crore project from the Home Department for developing big data analytics and facial recognition systems. It has collaborations with global institutions in France, the United States, and Germany, and is providing German language training to enhance international employment opportunities.

She also mentioned incubation support for startups and training programs for women and youth under various initiatives.

The event also included felicitation of gold medalists and industrial training institutes, along with the launch of an anti-drug campaign and an exhibition showcasing skill-based initiatives and collaborations with leading industries.
