Trinamool Faction Files Four Police Complaints Against Rebel Camp Over Party Logo, Leadership Claims

Kolkata, June 2026 : The original but now minority faction within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which continues to remain loyal to former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, has intensified its legal battle against the rebel but majority faction by filing four separate police complaints over the past 24 hours.

The complaints have been lodged against the rebel group led by expelled Trinamool Congress legislator Ritabrata Banerjee, accusing it of illegally using the party’s name and symbol, besides unlawfully claiming changes in the party’s leadership structure.

Of the four complaints, two were filed at police stations under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Police, while the remaining two were submitted to police stations falling under the Bidhannagar City Police Commissionerate.

The complaints under Kolkata Police were lodged at the Kalighat Police Station and the Pragati Maidan Police Station. Meanwhile, the New Town Police Station and the Bidhannagar Cyber Police Station, both under the Bidhannagar City Police, received the other two complaints. The latest complaint was submitted to the Bidhannagar Cyber Police Station.

According to leaders from the Mamata Banerjee-led faction, the central issue in all four complaints is the alleged unauthorised use of the Trinamool Congress logo and party identity by the rebel faction during public meetings and organisational programmes. They have also objected to the rebel group’s decision to project veteran party legislator Arup Roy as the new chairperson of the Trinamool Congress, replacing Mamata Banerjee.

Leaders from the original faction maintain that such actions violate the party’s constitution and organisational procedures. They argue that Mamata Banerjee continues to be the legitimate chairperson of the Trinamool Congress, and no individual or group has the authority to replace her without following the established party process.

A senior leader from the minority faction recalled that an organisational conference of the Trinamool Congress was held in 2022, during which elected delegates overwhelmingly endorsed Mamata Banerjee as the party’s chairperson for life.

He explained that, under the party’s internal rules, only members who had completed at least five years in the organisation were eligible to vote as delegates at that conference. As per the party constitution, such organisational conferences are held every five years, making the next scheduled conference due only in 2027.

The leader further stated that if any extraordinary situation arises before the next conference, only the party chairperson, Mamata Banerjee, has the authority to convene a special organisational session to deliberate on major decisions.

“Instead of following the party constitution and organisational procedures, the rebel faction unilaterally declared Arup Roy as the chairperson in the absence of Mamata Banerjee. Since then, they have continued using the party’s name and logo for public programmes without any authorisation. That is why we have approached four different police stations seeking legal action,” the leader said.

The dispute marks another escalation in the ongoing power struggle within the Trinamool Congress, which has witnessed an increasingly bitter confrontation between the faction loyal to Mamata Banerjee and the breakaway group headed by Ritabrata Banerjee.

However, the rebel camp has dismissed the legal complaints, maintaining that the issue is no longer confined to the party organisation but has entered the legal and constitutional domain.

According to leaders of the rebel faction, they have already approached the Election Commission of India (ECI), seeking recognition of their claim over the Trinamool Congress’s official name, election symbol and party funds.

“Since the matter regarding ownership of the party symbol and organisational control has already been placed before the Election Commission, the final decision will now rest with the Commission,” a representative of the rebel faction said.

With police complaints now filed and the Election Commission expected to examine the competing claims, the battle for control of the Trinamool Congress appears set to move simultaneously through legal, administrative and political channels.
