Washington, March 2026 : Donald Trump has asserted that the United States is engaged in active negotiations with Iran, describing recent developments as a potential turning point in the ongoing standoff, even as tensions remain high across the region.

Speaking at the White House during the swearing-in of Markwayne Mullin as Homeland Security Secretary, Trump said Washington is now dealing with a new set of Iranian interlocutors capable of reaching an agreement. “We’re in negotiations right now… and the other side would like to make a deal,” he told reporters, adding that recent changes in Iran’s leadership had created an opening for dialogue.

Trump went further, suggesting a “regime change” of sorts within Iran, clarifying that the current leadership differs significantly from those previously in power. According to him, this shift has led to fresh engagement channels between the two sides.

Highlighting what he described as a major sign of progress, Trump revealed that Iran had offered a significant “gesture” tied to oil and gas flows, particularly involving the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz. “They gave us a present… a very big one, worth a tremendous amount of money,” he said, linking it directly to maritime energy routes.

Echoing this view, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth described Iran’s military as having been “rapidly and historically defeated,” suggesting that the balance of power has shifted decisively.

Trump even went so far as to declare that the conflict had effectively been “won,” dismissing reports of ongoing hostilities as misleading. However, he acknowledged the fluid nature of the situation, calling it a “military operation” rather than a conventional war.

Senior members of the US administration, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, are reportedly involved in the negotiations, alongside other key figures such as Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.

Trump also referenced his discussions with Mohammed bin Salman, describing the Saudi leader as “a warrior,” indicating ongoing regional consultations amid the crisis.

While expressing optimism that a deal could be reached, Trump struck a cautious note on trust. “I don’t trust anybody… I don’t trust them,” he said, referring to Iran, even as he predicted that negotiations would ultimately succeed.

Framing the situation as an opportunity to end hostilities, Trump emphasised his preference for a diplomatic resolution. “If we can end this without more lives being lost, I’d like to do that,” he said.
