RCB Ready for Fresh Challenge as IPL 2026 Begins: Coach Andy Flower

Bengaluru, March 2026 : Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru are gearing up to kick off the Indian Premier League 2026 season with a high-voltage clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. Despite entering the tournament as title holders, head coach Andy Flower said the team is treating the new season as a completely fresh challenge.

Speaking ahead of the opener, Flower emphasised that past success would not guarantee future results. He noted that the team has evolved, with players gaining experience and opponents also improving significantly. According to him, changing conditions and new dynamics make this season a different test altogether. He added that the squad is excited to embrace the uncertainty and compete with renewed energy.

Reflecting on the team’s performances at their home ground last season, Flower admitted that the side had a difficult start, losing their first three matches at the venue. However, he said those setbacks provided valuable lessons. With better preparation and deeper understanding of local conditions, the team hopes to turn their home ground into a strong advantage this time around. He highlighted that familiarity with pitch behaviour and playing conditions could give RCB an edge over visiting teams.

The coach also praised the leadership group, particularly captain Rajat Patidar, who led the side to the title in his first year as skipper. Flower described Patidar as calm, composed, and highly respected within the dressing room. He noted that such qualities are especially reassuring for bowlers under pressure. Vice-captain Jitesh Sharma was also commended for his energy and tactical awareness. Flower said Sharma’s perspective from behind the stumps adds valuable insights, making the leadership combination effective on the field.

A key focus for RCB will once again be senior batter Virat Kohli, whose form remains crucial to the team’s success. Flower expressed confidence in Kohli’s mental state and preparation, stating that the veteran looks highly motivated and in excellent rhythm during training sessions. He added that Kohli appears to be at the peak of his game, which bodes well for the team’s campaign.

On the bowling front, Flower showed faith in the domestic seamers within the squad. He highlighted the progress of young players, noting that they have worked hard to improve their skills and are ready to step up when given opportunities. The coach stressed that having a strong pool of Indian fast bowlers provides depth and flexibility to the team.

Flower also shared an update on Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood, confirming that he has joined the squad and is fit. However, he clarified that Hazlewood will not be available for the opening match as he has just arrived. The team management plans to monitor his fitness closely before including him in upcoming games.

As the new IPL season begins, RCB will aim to build on their championship success while adapting to new challenges. With a balanced squad, experienced leadership, and strong preparation, the team will look to start their title defence on a winning note in front of their home crowd.
