Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana Empowers Farmer Paklu Markam Through Fish Farming and Agriculture

Raipur, March 2026: The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is emerging as a significant initiative in empowering fish farmers in Chhattisgarh. In Kondagaon district, various schemes implemented by the Fisheries Department along with state and central government initiatives are playing an important role in strengthening rural livelihoods. Benefiting from these schemes, a young farmer from Palli village, Paklu Markam, has set an inspiring example of success through hard work and dedication.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, Markam constructed a pond on his land and began fish farming. Today, he not only practices aquaculture but has also adopted an integrated farming system, earning an annual income of around Rs 6 lakh. He shared that in 2023, he received a subsidy of Rs 6.6 lakh for pond construction, against a total project cost of Rs 11 lakh under the scheme.

Currently, Markam owns three ponds where he cultivates various species of fish, including Rohu, Catla, Common Carp, Grass Carp, and Pangas. In addition to fish farming, he has diversified into poultry farming, piggery, and agriculture. In poultry, he raises Sonali and indigenous breeds of chickens. He also rears the Aseel breed, known for cockfighting, which commands a much higher price than regular poultry.

Furthermore, he owns around 20 pigs and also raises ducks of Khaki Campbell, Indian Runner, and Moti breeds, which serve as additional sources of income. Alongside these activities, he cultivates crops such as maize and others on his farmland.

By integrating multiple agricultural and allied activities, Markam has successfully expanded his income streams, leading to a significant improvement in his financial condition. Today, he is not only self-reliant but also serves as an inspiration for other farmers in the region.
