Trump Signals Possible Breakthrough with Iran, Sets One-Week Timeline to Gauge Leadership Response

Washington, March 2026 : US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington could soon determine whether Iran’s leadership is willing to engage constructively with the United States, suggesting that clarity may emerge within a week.

In an interview with The New York Post, Trump said the White House would assess whether Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf is prepared to work with the US. “We’re gonna find out,” Trump said, adding that he expects to have a clearer picture “in about a week.”

Trump also claimed that Iran is undergoing a major internal transformation, describing what he called a “total regime change.” According to him, the previous leadership structure has been replaced by a new set of figures who appear more open to engagement. “The regimes of the past are gone and we’re dealing with a whole new set of people,” he said, adding that they have so far been “much more reasonable.”

At the same time, Trump renewed his call for Tehran to strike a deal quickly, warning that the window for negotiations may not remain open indefinitely. His push for urgency aligns with a broader diplomatic effort by the White House to resolve tensions while maintaining military pressure in the region.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration is aiming to reach an agreement with Iran by April 6, a deadline set by Trump after postponing planned airstrikes on Iranian energy facilities. She noted that ongoing discussions with Iranian representatives have shown signs of progress, particularly in private engagements.

“Those involved in talks appear more reasonable behind the scenes,” Leavitt said, while declining to identify the officials. She also suggested that the current negotiators differ significantly from earlier leadership figures, hinting at a shift in tone within Iran’s decision-making circles.

However, uncertainty persists over how decisions are being made in Tehran. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it remains unclear who holds ultimate authority in Iran’s current structure, complicating diplomatic efforts.

Despite repeated assertions from Trump that negotiations are progressing well, analysts caution that tangible breakthroughs remain elusive. Continued US military strikes and troop deployments in the Middle East have added to tensions, potentially undermining the prospects for a swift resolution.

The situation has become more urgent as the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran entered its one-month mark on Sunday. Trump further escalated rhetoric by warning that the United States could “completely obliterate” Iran’s electricity infrastructure if a deal is not reached.

With a self-imposed deadline approaching and both diplomatic and military tracks advancing simultaneously, the coming days are expected to be critical in determining whether the standoff moves toward de-escalation or further confrontation.
