Russian Military Plane Crash in Crimea Kills 29, No Survivors Reported

Moscow, April 2026 : A tragic aviation accident in Crimea has claimed the lives of 29 people after a Russian An-26 military transport aircraft crashed during a scheduled flight, the Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed on Wednesday. The victims included six crew members and 23 passengers, with no survivors reported.

According to officials, contact with the aircraft was lost at around 18:00 Moscow time on March 31 while it was flying over the Crimean Peninsula. The plane was later found to have crashed into a cliff, as reported by sources at the scene. Search and rescue teams subsequently located the wreckage and confirmed the fatalities.

Preliminary findings suggest that the crash was caused by a technical malfunction, with authorities ruling out any involvement of hostile fire. The Ministry of Defence stated that the aircraft was on a routine mission when communication was suddenly lost, prompting an immediate search operation.

The Antonov An-26 is a light military transport aircraft that has been widely used for decades for carrying cargo and personnel over short to medium distances. It is capable of accommodating up to 40 passengers, making it a key component of military logistics operations. Despite its long service history, incidents involving aging aircraft and technical issues have occasionally raised concerns about safety.

Officials have not disclosed the exact number of individuals on board beyond confirming the fatalities, but the absence of any survivors indicates the severity of the crash. Investigations are currently underway to determine the precise cause of the malfunction and to assess whether maintenance or mechanical failure played a role.

This incident follows another deadly aviation accident involving a Russian military aircraft in December 2025. On December 9, an Antonov An-22 crashed during a test flight near the village of Ivankovo in the Ivanovo region, east of Moscow. The aircraft had reportedly taken off after undergoing repair work, suggesting it was part of a post-maintenance evaluation.

In that earlier crash, all seven crew members on board lost their lives, according to reports from state-run media. The back-to-back tragedies have drawn attention to operational and safety challenges within Russia’s military aviation sector.

As authorities continue their investigation into the Crimea crash, the focus remains on uncovering the technical factors behind the incident and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
