’ Marathon in Delhi, Reaffirms Commitment to Constitution
New Delhi, April 2026 : Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Sunday flagged off the ‘Run for Ambedkar, Run for Constitution’ marathon at Mandi House in the national capital, drawing a large turnout of participants and party workers.
The event, organised by the Indian National Congress through its SC Department in coordination with the OBC Department, witnessed enthusiastic participation from leaders, supporters, and members of the public. The initiative aimed to highlight the importance of safeguarding constitutional values and promoting the ideals of equality and justice.
Addressing the gathering, Gandhi stressed the significance of the Constitution and paid tribute to B. R. Ambedkar, describing it as the foundation of modern India. He said that without the Constitution, the country would not have evolved into its present democratic form.
Launching a sharp attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Gandhi alleged that certain forces were attempting to weaken constitutional principles. He claimed that while some leaders may publicly show respect to Ambedkar, their underlying intentions contradict the spirit of equality enshrined in the Constitution.
“Some people want to dismantle the Constitution because they do not believe in equal rights for all citizens,” Gandhi said, adding that the Congress party remains firmly committed to protecting and strengthening democratic institutions. He emphasised that the party’s objective is to ensure that the message and values of the Constitution reach every corner of the country.
Former Indian cricket captain and Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin, who currently serves as a minister in Telangana, also addressed the gathering. He underlined the importance of unity and the need to uphold constitutional values in the face of challenges.
Azharuddin said that the marathon was not merely a symbolic event but a collective effort to honour Ambedkar’s legacy and promote awareness about the Constitution. He expressed concern over what he described as attempts to misinterpret constitutional principles and called on citizens to remain vigilant in protecting democratic ideals.
Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda echoed similar sentiments, describing the event as a “mission” rather than just a marathon. He said the initiative reflects the party’s resolve to carry forward Ambedkar’s vision and safeguard the nation’s democratic framework.
Another senior leader, Udit Raj, highlighted the massive turnout at the event, noting that thousands of Ambedkarite supporters and Congress workers participated. He expressed concern over the current state of constitutional institutions, alleging that the voice of the common people is under increasing pressure.
The marathon concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to the principles of justice, liberty, and equality. The event added momentum to the ongoing political discourse, with the Congress positioning itself as a defender of constitutional values ahead of key political developments.
