California Man Identified as Suspect in Shooting Near White House Dinner, Faces Federal Charges

Washington, April 2026: US investigators have identified the suspect involved in the shooting near the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner as a 31-year-old man from California, believed to have acted alone and now facing a series of federal charges related to firearms offences and the attack.

According to law enforcement officials cited by The New York Times, the suspect has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a resident of Torrance, California. He was taken into custody after attempting to breach a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton, where the high-profile event was being held.

Authorities said the suspect was stopped near the magnetometer screening area and did not manage to enter the main ballroom, where Donald Trump, senior administration officials, and hundreds of journalists were present. Despite being intercepted, the attacker reportedly opened fire after attempting to push past security personnel.

Officials confirmed that the suspect was armed with multiple weapons and discharged several rounds before being subdued by Secret Service agents and other law enforcement officers. The confrontation took place just meters away from the ballroom, raising serious concerns about how close the attacker came to a heavily secured gathering.

Speaking at a press briefing, President Trump described the suspect as “a sick person” and indicated that early findings pointed to a lone-wolf scenario. “They seemed to think he’s acting alone, and I feel that too,” Trump said, while noting that investigators are continuing to examine all possible angles. He added that federal agencies had already begun searching the suspect’s residence in California and reviewing his personal and digital background.

So far, officials have not publicly disclosed any clear motive behind the attack. However, investigators are examining the suspect’s digital footprint, possible affiliations, and personal history to determine whether ideological, political, or personal factors played a role.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that prosecutors are preparing multiple charges against the accused. “There will be several charges related to the shooting, firearms possession, and anything else we can pursue,” he said, cautioning that the investigation is still in its early stages and could expand further as more evidence emerges.

Blanche added that federal agencies are actively executing search warrants and analysing forensic evidence, including weapons and ballistic materials recovered from the scene. He emphasised close coordination between federal and local authorities in building the case.

Kash Patel also confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is conducting a detailed forensic analysis. “We are examining all the ballistics recovered at the scene, including the long gun and shell casings, and conducting multiple witness interviews,” he said. Patel urged the public to assist investigators, stating that even the smallest piece of information could prove valuable.

The suspect was quickly apprehended after the shooting began, with security personnel responding within seconds. Officials credited the swift action of the Secret Service for preventing a potentially far more serious incident.

During the confrontation, one Secret Service officer was struck by gunfire but was protected by a bullet-resistant vest. Authorities said the officer is expected to recover fully, and no other injuries have been reported.

The incident has also raised questions about security vulnerabilities, as the attacker was able to approach the screening area while armed. Investigators are reviewing how the suspect reached such proximity to the event despite extensive security measures.

Officials have not ruled out additional charges, which could include attempted murder, assault on a federal officer, and other weapons-related offences, depending on the final findings of the investigation.

The White House Correspondents’ dinner, attended annually by top political leaders, journalists, and public figures, is considered one of the most secure events in Washington. Authorities подчеркнули that the fact the suspect was stopped before entering the ballroom will be a critical aspect of the case, underscoring both the risks involved and the effectiveness of the immediate response.
