Let us set an example of Maharashtra’s spirit of savings for the nation!

Mumbai, May 2026 : Whenever the country faces a crisis, Maharashtra has always stepped forward to support Delhi. The phrase “Sahyadri rushed to help the Himalayas,” coined since the time of Maharashtra’s first Chief Minister Yashwantrao Chavan, remains as relevant today as ever. Whether it is war, drought, floods, or a pandemic, Maharashtra has consistently stood with the nation and set new standards of assistance in every crisis.

In the backdrop of rising tensions in West Asia and the resulting global economic instability, the country once again faces a major challenge. While the duration of this crisis may not be in our control, Maharashtra can play a significant role in strengthening the national economy through patience, discipline, and savings.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to issue a call in this regard. His appeal to citizens is not merely about reducing expenses but about transforming lifestyles in the national interest. He has clearly conveyed the message: “The more you save, the greater your service to the nation.” He has emphasised avoiding unnecessary fuel consumption, increasing the use of public transport, promoting work-from-home, encouraging the use of indigenous products, reducing dependence on chemical fertilisers, and conserving energy. In response, the Maharashtra government has already begun implementing several comprehensive measures.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has given credibility to this message through his own actions. His arrival at Vidhan Bhavan on a two-wheeler was not merely symbolic—it was a clear message to the administration and society that savings must be practiced, not just preached. Similarly, his decision to travel on a commercial passenger flight instead of a private or chartered aircraft for an event in Bengaluru reflects the same philosophy. When leadership sets an example, society adopts change faster. Therefore, the administration must ensure that this message reaches the grassroots level and is implemented with discipline even at the village level.

Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal has issued clear directives to the entire administrative machinery regarding steps to be taken in the current situation. Key measures include suspension of unnecessary foreign tours by government officials, minimising the use of official vehicles for office work, encouraging carpooling and public transport, and promoting one day a week travel by metro, local train, or bus. These measures are aimed not only at fuel savings but also at promoting an environmentally responsible lifestyle.

In today’s times, energy conservation itself is becoming true patriotism. The government has directed maximum use of natural light in offices. Strict implementation has been initiated to ensure that lights, fans, air conditioners, and computers are switched off after office hours. Regulating air conditioning temperatures is also part of this initiative. Saving every unit of electricity is now being seen as reducing the burden on the national economy.

Special emphasis is also being placed on alternative energy sources. Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana, efforts are being accelerated to bring solar energy to households. The expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure is being fast-tracked. Promotion of PNG usage is being encouraged in hotels and restaurants in major cities. These initiatives represent not just savings, but a pathway to sustainable development.

The government is also prioritising digital and online systems. Ministries, departments, and district-level meetings are being encouraged through video conferencing wherever possible. This will significantly save time, fuel, and financial resources. In today’s technology-driven era, this is the right time to make administrative processes smarter and more economical.

The idea of savings should not remain limited to the government alone. Every section of society must participate. Reducing unnecessary electricity use at home, preferring public transport over private vehicles, prioritising local and indigenous products, avoiding food wastage, and using water judiciously—these small steps together create a large impact. Nation-building is not only the responsibility of the government but also the duty of every citizen.

In agriculture too, the focus is shifting towards savings and sustainability. The government is promoting natural and organic farming by reducing excessive use of chemical fertilisers. Through soil testing, crop-specific fertiliser usage, and proper agricultural management, efforts are being made to reduce costs while maintaining productivity. A strong rural economy ensures a strong national economy, and Maharashtra is well aware of this.

Maharashtra’s tradition is not only of resilience but also of guiding the nation in times of crisis. Whether it is the cooperative movement, industrial growth, or social commitment, Maharashtra has always set an example for the country. Today, once again, the state has the opportunity to lead by example. If Maharashtra moves forward on the principles of savings, discipline, and responsibility, it can set a new national benchmark.

What is needed today is not just announcements but action. This campaign initiated by the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis must reach every citizen. From villages to cities, from students to officials, and from farmers to industry leaders, everyone must participate in this collective effort. If this “yagna of savings” becomes a mass movement, Maharashtra will once again emerge as a source of inspiration for the nation.

Crisis will come and go—but Maharashtra that stands for the nation in times of crisis will always stand tall. The generosity of Maharashtra is as great as its responsibility and capability. In such a situation, let us step forward as responsible Indians. Let us respond to the appeal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Let us make India more self-reliant and stronger!
