Over 1.5 Million Pilgrims Arrive in Mecca for Hajj Amid West Asia Tensions and Heightened Security

Mecca, May 2026 : More than 1.5 million pilgrims have arrived in the holy city of Mecca for this year’s annual Hajj pilgrimage, taking place amid heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia and cautious hopes for a possible easing of regional conflicts.

The large gathering of worshippers from across the world, including Iran and other Muslim-majority nations, marks one of the largest annual religious congregations globally. Pilgrims dressed in white ihram garments travelled by bus and on foot to reach the sprawling Mina encampment after performing the “tawaf,” the ritual of circling the Kaaba seven times at the Grand Mosque.

This year’s pilgrimage is being held against a backdrop of uncertainty in the region, including ongoing tensions linked to the Iran conflict and broader instability in West Asia. The start of Hajj also coincided with diplomatic signals from US President Donald Trump, who indicated possible progress toward extending a fragile ceasefire involving Iran and discussions on reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

According to reports, Saudi authorities have intensified security measures to ensure the safety of pilgrims and prevent any spillover of regional tensions into the holy sites. The Saudi Ministry of Defence has significantly strengthened air defence systems around Mecca and surrounding sacred areas.

A video released by the ministry showed advanced air defence batteries deployed on the outskirts of Mecca, highlighting the scale of security preparedness. Officials stated that these systems are tasked with monitoring and neutralising any aerial threats to safeguard pilgrims during the religious rituals.

“The air defence forces are responsible for protecting the skies above the holy sites and responding to all aerial threats, ensuring the safety and tranquillity of visitors,” the ministry said in an official statement.

Saudi defence authorities also reported recent security incidents in the region. Last week, three drones entering Saudi airspace from Iraq were intercepted, according to the Ministry of Defence. In a related development, the United Arab Emirates also reported that its air defence systems had detected six drones approaching from Iraq over a 48-hour period earlier this week.

Despite regional instability, Saudi officials have confirmed that Hajj operations are proceeding smoothly, with an increased number of international pilgrims compared to the previous year. Authorities have implemented extensive logistical and security arrangements to manage crowd movement, healthcare services, and emergency response systems.

The Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, draws millions of Muslims annually to perform a series of sacred rituals in Mecca and its surrounding areas. This year’s pilgrimage continues under tight security, reflecting both the spiritual significance of the event and the broader regional security challenges.
