Singapore Airlines Reaffirms Confidence in Air India, Sees Strong Progress in Transformation

New Delhi, July 2026 : Singapore Airlines (SIA) has reaffirmed its confidence in Air India’s long-term growth prospects, stating that the Tata Group-owned carrier has made “tangible progress” in its transformation journey despite facing operational and market challenges. The airline also confirmed that its 25.1 per cent stake in Air India continues to play a central role in its long-term multi-hub strategy, driven by India’s rapidly expanding aviation market.

The remarks came in response to questions from shareholders and investors ahead of Singapore Airlines’ Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for July 24. Addressing concerns over its investment, SIA said it had conducted a formal impairment assessment after identifying certain indicators that warranted a review. However, the assessment concluded that there was no need to write down the value of its investment in Air India.

According to a filing with the Singapore Exchange, the airline expressed confidence in Air India’s strategic direction and highlighted the country’s strong aviation growth potential as a key factor behind its continued commitment. SIA noted that India remains one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, making its investment in Air India an important component of its regional expansion strategy.

The airline acknowledged that Air India has encountered several significant challenges over the past year, including the depreciation of the Indian rupee, persistent global supply chain disruptions affecting aircraft deliveries and maintenance, the closure of Pakistan’s airspace, and the tragic aircraft crash in June 2025 that claimed 260 lives.

Despite these setbacks, Singapore Airlines said Air India has demonstrated measurable improvements across multiple operational areas. According to the airline, progress has been recorded in enhancing customer experience, expanding its fleet and route network, improving operational efficiency, and upgrading both ground services and in-flight offerings. These initiatives, it said, reflect the ongoing transformation programme being implemented under the Tata Group’s leadership.

On the issue of future financial support, SIA said any request for additional capital from Air India would be evaluated carefully by its board after taking into account the group’s own capital requirements, investment priorities and Air India’s long-term business strategy. However, the airline declined to comment on media reports suggesting that Air India had sought a capital infusion of approximately $1.1 billion in October 2025.

Reiterating its financial oversight process, Singapore Airlines said it reviews its investment in Air India at every reporting period to determine whether there are any indicators of impairment. Whenever objective evidence suggests that the investment’s value could be affected, a detailed impairment assessment is undertaken in accordance with established accounting standards.

The airline also highlighted the close strategic relationship between the two carriers. Singapore Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer serves as a non-executive, non-independent director on Air India’s board, enabling the company to contribute strategic guidance, industry expertise and global best practices as Air India continues its ambitious transformation programme.

SIA’s reaffirmation of confidence is expected to strengthen investor sentiment, signalling that despite near-term challenges, Air India’s long-term growth trajectory and strategic importance remain intact.
