Commonwealth Games 2026 Begins in Glasgow as India Eyes Strong Start with 124-Member Contingent

Glasgow, July 22: The 2026 Commonwealth Games will officially get underway in Glasgow, Scotland, on Thursday, bringing together nearly 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories for 11 days of competition across 10 sports. A total of 215 gold medals will be up for grabs as the multi-sport spectacle returns to one of Scotland’s most iconic sporting cities.

India will be making its 19th appearance at the Commonwealth Games, having first participated in the 1934 edition. The country has sent a 124-member contingent, with athletes competing in eight able-bodied sports and five para-sports, aiming to build on the impressive performances delivered at the 2022 Birmingham Games.

India’s campaign will begin with lawn bowls, a discipline that brought unprecedented success to the country four years ago. Indian players will feature in both the men’s and women’s events on the opening day, hoping to replicate their historic achievements on the Commonwealth stage.

The Indian women’s lawn bowls team etched its name in history at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022 when Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey defeated South Africa to win the gold medal in the women’s fours event. The triumph marked India’s first-ever medal in lawn bowls, a sport that has been part of the Commonwealth Games programme since 1930, except for the 1966 edition.

India also enjoyed success in the men’s competition, where Sunil Bahadur, Chandan Singh, Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar secured the silver medal in the men’s fours event. The team also narrowly missed another podium finish in the men’s pairs competition, highlighting the country’s growing strength in the sport.

With those landmark performances raising expectations, the Indian lawn bowls squad heads to Glasgow determined to once again challenge the traditional powerhouses of the sport.

The opening ceremony will be held at Glasgow’s iconic OVO Hydro, one of the United Kingdom’s premier entertainment and sporting venues, renowned for hosting major international events and world-famous musical performances.

India’s Day 1 Schedule (July 23)

  • 2:00 PM IST: Men’s Singles Lawn Bowls – Group Stage (Day 1)
  • 2:00 PM IST: Women’s Pairs Lawn Bowls – Group Stage (Day 1)
  • 10:30 PM IST onwards: Commonwealth Games 2026 Opening Ceremony

With a blend of experienced campaigners and promising young talent, India will be aiming for another memorable Commonwealth Games campaign as the competition begins in Glasgow.
