Celebrating the Tamil Festival of Pongal with Joyful Distribution
Chennai : In celebration of the Tamil festival of Pongal, the Tamil Nadu government has announced the distribution of special Pongal gift hampers to 2,20,94,585 rice ration cardholders and Sri Lankan Tamil refugee families living in camps. Each family will receive 1 kg of rice, 1 kg of sugar, and a whole sugarcane as part of the initiative.
As part of the government’s broader welfare program, 1 crore 77 lakh 22 thousand liters of milk and 1 crore 77 lakh 64 thousand packets of curd will also be distributed to ration cardholders across the state. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the distribution at the Thiruvallikkeni Urban Cooperative Society in Chennai today.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said, “Pongal is a festival that brings happiness and unity to the hearts of the Tamil people. It is not just a harvest festival but also a celebration of Tamil culture, traditions, and community spirit.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring every family celebrates Pongal with joy.
Highlights of the Pongal Gift Distribution:
- The scheme, implemented at a cost of ₹249.76 crore, will benefit all rice ration cardholders and Sri Lankan Tamil refugee families in the state.
- Special Pongal hampers, including milk and curd, will be distributed across 37,224 fair price shops from January 9 to January 13, 2025.
- Nearly 50,000 officials and staff from various departments, including Cooperation, Food, Rural Development, and Revenue, have been deployed to ensure the smooth implementation of the scheme.
The program aims to ensure that every household receives their Pongal gift before the festival begins. The Chief Minister also praised the collaborative efforts of various departments in organizing the large-scale distribution.
The launch event was attended by notable dignitaries, including the Honorable Minister for Cooperation, K.R. Periyakaruppan, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, R. Sakkarapani, Chennai Mayor R. Priya, Member of Parliament Tamizhachi Thangapandian, and several senior government officials. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to preserving Tamil traditions and fostering community happiness during the festive season.
