Sharon Raj Murder: Kerala Court Sentences Greeshma to Death
In a landmark ruling, a Kerala court sentenced Greeshma, the prime accused in the murder of 23-year-old Sharon Raj, to death. Sharon, a final-year BSc Radiology student from Thiruvananthapuram, was in a relationship with Greeshma, a literature student. Her uncle, Nirmal Kumar, received a three-year imprisonment sentence for his involvement.
The Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions Court, led by Judge A.M. Basheer, convicted Greeshma under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 302 (murder), 328 (causing hurt by poison), and 364 (kidnapping or abduction to murder). Additionally, she received ten years for abduction and five years for misleading the investigation. Nirmal Kumar was convicted under IPC Section 201 for aiding in destroying evidence, while Greeshma’s mother was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
The case dates back to October 2022 when Greeshma, whose family had arranged her marriage to another man, allegedly plotted Sharon’s murder. The prosecution revealed that she laced an Ayurvedic tonic with poison, which Sharon consumed during a visit to her residence in Kanyakumari. Sharon’s health deteriorated rapidly, leading to multiple organ failure and his tragic death on October 25, 2022.
A special investigation team, led by Crime Branch DySP Johnson, uncovered crucial evidence, including the concealment of the poison bottle, which supported the charges against Greeshma. She was arrested on October 31, 2022, followed by her mother and uncle.
During the trial, Greeshma faced charges of murder, abduction, and destruction of evidence. After nearly a year in custody, she was granted bail by the Kerala High Court in September 2023 under strict conditions, while the trial proceeded.
This shocking case has drawn widespread attention, highlighting the tragic consequences of trust betrayed and the importance of justice in addressing heinous crimes.
