BJP Leaders Detained During March to Telangana Assembly Over Unfulfilled Promises

Hyderabad, March 2026 : Police on Monday detained N. Ramchander Rao along with several leaders and activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) when they attempted to march towards the State Assembly, demanding the implementation of electoral promises made by the ruling Congress government.

The detentions took place at multiple locations across the city as authorities moved to prevent the planned protest. The BJP had called for a “siege” of the Assembly, alleging that the Congress government had failed to fulfil its six key guarantees and other commitments made to the public during the elections.

Carrying party flags and raising slogans against the government, BJP workers and leaders attempted to move towards the Assembly but were stopped by police forces deployed in large numbers. Ramchander Rao was taken into custody and shifted to Panjagutta Police Station, where several party leaders later gathered to express solidarity with him.

Reacting strongly to the police action, Ramchander Rao accused the state government of suppressing democratic dissent. He remarked that the current governance in Telangana resembled the “Indiramma Rajyam” of 1975 rather than a true “Praja Palana” or people’s rule.

“Congress has once again exposed its anti-democratic mindset by trying to silence protests. I was detained for standing up against the betrayal and false promises made to the people of Telangana. The public has had enough,” he said in a statement shared on social media.

He further asserted that such actions would not deter the opposition from raising its voice. “The voice of protest cannot be suppressed through coercion. Instead of honouring its commitments, the government is resorting to unlawful arrests against those questioning its failures,” Rao said, adding that the BJP would continue its agitation until the promises are fulfilled.

Meanwhile, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, also condemned the detentions, describing them as politically motivated. He questioned whether raising democratic demands had become a crime in the state.

“After 27 months in power, the Congress government has failed to implement its guarantees. Instead of delivering on promises, it is pushing the state into debt with no clear intent to act,” he said.

Bandi Sanjay demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Ramchander Rao and other detained BJP workers. He warned that the party would intensify its protests across Telangana if the government continued what he termed as attempts to stifle opposition voices.

“People are being taken for granted, but we will continue to hold the Congress accountable at every step until the six guarantees are implemented,” he added.

The incident has further escalated political tensions in Telangana, with the BJP stepping up its attack on the ruling Congress over governance and unfulfilled electoral commitments.
