Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. After completing his schooling at the age of 18, he pursued law in England. Gandhi was a close associate of Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Rabindranath Tagore. He actively participated in the Indian National Congress movement and led the freedom struggle against British rule.

One of his most significant protests was the Salt Satyagraha. In response to the British-imposed salt tax, Gandhi led a historic march from Ahmedabad to Dandi, Gujarat, and symbolically broke the salt law by producing salt, inspiring mass civil disobedience.

Gandhi also played a pivotal role in the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Quit India Movement, advocating for India’s independence through non-violent resistance. It was Rabindranath Tagore who conferred upon him the title of “Mahatma” in recognition of his selfless service.

During a visit to Madurai in 1921, Gandhi was deeply moved by the poverty of the local people, who could not afford proper clothing. From that day onward, he adopted the simple attire of a loincloth and shawl, which became a symbol of his commitment to India’s poor.
