Mumbai Indians Clinch Historic Second TATA WPL Title in Thrilling Final

Mumbai Indians (MI) made history by becoming the first team to win two TATA Women’s Premier League (WPL) titles, defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by eight runs in a tense 2025 final. The championship match, like much of the season, was a thrilling contest, with MI holding their nerve in a last-over finish to defend a total of 150 runs.

MI’s victory was powered by a stellar all-round performance, led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s 66 off 44 balls, Natalie Sciver-Brunt’s clutch final over and 3-30, and Amelia Kerr’s 2-25, which helped her secure the Purple Cap. Despite a late surge from Marizanne Kapp (40 off 25 balls), Sciver-Brunt’s brilliant death bowling ensured MI lifted the trophy once again.

DC’s Strong Start with the Ball

Opting to field first after winning the toss, DC captain Meg Lanning relied on her bowlers to deliver early breakthroughs. Her decision paid off as Marizanne Kapp and Shikha Pandey built early pressure. Kapp dismissed Hayley Matthews (3 off 10 balls) in the third over, followed by Yastika Bhatia (8 off 14 balls), caught brilliantly by Jemimah Rodrigues at cover. At 15/2 after five overs, MI was in early trouble.

Kapp bowled her full quota of four overs upfront, finishing with impressive figures of 2-11, further cementing her reputation as one of the best all-rounders in the league.

Kaur and Sciver-Brunt Lead the Fightback

With MI struggling, the experienced duo of Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur steadied the innings. After a cautious start, the pair launched an aggressive counterattack. Kaur led the charge with a six over deep square leg and three consecutive fours off Jess Jonassen. She brought up her third fifty of the season and took MI to 87/2 after 13 overs.

Sciver-Brunt, who became the first player in TATA WPL history to reach 1,000 career runs, fell for 30 off 28 balls while attempting a slog sweep. Following her dismissal, DC’s bowlers fought back. Jonassen dismissed Amelia Kerr and Sajeevan Sajana in quick succession, while Annabel Sutherland removed Kaur, who holed out to Kapp at deep extra cover. MI slipped to 118/6, but cameos from Amanjot Kaur and G. Kamalini helped them reach a competitive 150-run target.

MI’s Early Strikes Put DC on the Back Foot

In response, MI’s bowlers struck early. Sciver-Brunt clean bowled Meg Lanning, while Shabnim Ismail trapped Shafali Verma lbw, reducing DC to 17/2 in three overs. Just as Rodrigues and Jonassen looked to rebuild, Kerr dismissed Jonassen (13 off 15 balls) and then took a brilliant diving catch off her own bowling to send back Rodrigues (30 off 20 balls).

MI’s sharp fielding continued, with Sanskriti Gupta and Bhatia combining to run out Sarah Bryce, leaving DC in deep trouble at 84/6, still needing 66 runs off seven overs.

Kapp’s Heroics and Sciver-Brunt’s Ice-Cold Final Over

With DC on the brink, Marizanne Kapp launched a spirited fightback, smashing 17 runs in the 16th over, including two fours and a six. Niki Prasad added further tension, hitting a towering six off the penultimate ball of the 19th over, bringing the equation down to 14 runs required off the final over.

However, Sciver-Brunt, who also won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, displayed nerves of steel, conceding just five runs in the final over to seal MI’s second WPL title and a second final victory over DC.
