Sunrisers Hyderabad Crush Lucknow Super Giants, End Their Playoff Hopes

In a high-scoring IPL 2025 clash, Sunrisers Hyderabad handed Lucknow Super Giants a crushing six-wicket defeat at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium in Lucknow, ending their hopes of making it to the playoffs. Chasing a formidable target of 206 runs, Sunrisers reached the total comfortably in just 18.2 overs with 10 balls to spare.

Despite the early dismissal of Atharva Taide—who replaced Travis Head in the playing XI—for just 13 runs, Sunrisers’ batting unit rose to the occasion. Abhishek Sharma led the charge with a fluent 59, while Ishan Kishan chipped in with a solid 35. Heinrich Klaasen kept the momentum going with a quickfire 47, and Kamindu Mendis added 32 crucial runs. Nitish Kumar Reddy finished the match with the winning boundary, remaining unbeaten on 5 and igniting celebrations in the Sunrisers’ dugout.

Among Lucknow’s bowlers, Digvijay Rathore impressed with 2 wickets, while O. Roorkie and Shardul Thakur picked up a wicket each. However, their efforts weren’t enough to contain the explosive Hyderabad lineup.

Earlier, after being put in to bat, Lucknow Super Giants posted an impressive 205 for 7 in their 20 overs. The innings was built on a strong 115-run opening stand between Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram. Marsh smashed 65 off 39 balls, laced with six boundaries and four sixes, while Markram scored 61 off 38 balls, also hitting four fours and four sixes.

However, the rest of the batting lineup failed to build on this platform. Captain Rishabh Pant continued his poor run, managing only 7 runs. Nicholas Pooran’s 45 off 26 balls provided a mid-innings boost, but the team faltered in the death overs. Ayush Badoni (3), Abdul Samad (3), and Shardul Thakur (4) failed to make any impact.

Sunrisers bowlers fought back in the final overs, with Eshan Malinga taking 2 wickets. Harsh Dubey, Harshal Patel, and Nitish Kumar Reddy claimed one wicket each. Lucknow lost three wickets in the final over—one to Nitish and two via run-outs—halting their momentum.

With this defeat, Lucknow Super Giants are officially out of playoff contention. The loss has also intensified scrutiny on captain Rishabh Pant, whose lackluster performances as both player and leader have disappointed fans and management alike.

Following this result, the playoff race has taken shape with Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, and Mumbai Indians securing their places in the top four.

Team Maverick.
