New Government Medical College and Hospital in South Mumbai Commissioned.
Mumbai, Dt. 4: The Government Medical College approved in 2012 is now operational at Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital, Mumbai. Vidhan Sabha Speaker and Colaba Constituency MLA Adv. Rahul Narvekar has consistently pursued this project, holding meetings with relevant officials to pave the way for the immediate implementation of the much-awaited Government Medical College and Hospital, providing significant relief to the patients of South Mumbai.
The new Government Medical College, starting with an enrollment of 50 students, will operate from the premises of GT Hospital and Kama Hospital, Mumbai, beginning in the academic year 2024-25. The Medical Council of India has recently granted permission for this, and from the next academic year 2025-26, the student intake will double to 100.
This project was approved by a Government Decision dated January 31, 2012, issued by the Department of Medical Education and Medicines. Legislative Assembly Speaker Adv. Narvekar held a meeting with the officials of the concerned department on November 20, 2023, to expedite the implementation of the Government Medical College. He also coordinated with the Medical Education Department, Public Health Department, and Public Works Department, turning the dream of a new government medical college and hospital into a reality.
With the new medical college and hospital now functioning at full capacity, the number of MBBS doctors will increase, and patients in South Mumbai will receive expedited medical services from expert doctors. Various social organizations in the Colaba Assembly area and South Mumbai, along with NGOs working for patient care, have congratulated Adv. Narvekar and Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif for their prompt action on this decision.
