Chief Electoral Officer, Mizoram Meets Officials at the Election Commission of India

Dr. Lalrozama, the newly appointed Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Mizoram, met with Mr. Madhup Vyas, the outgoing CEO of Mizoram. He also had a courtesy meeting with the Deputy Election Commissioner and other key officials at the Election Commission of India (ECI) in New Delhi. The responsibilities of the Chief Electoral Officer have been temporarily handed over to Ms. Ethel Rothangpuii, Joint CEO, Mizoram.

During the meeting, Dr. Lalrozama briefed the Election Commission of India about the challenges and developmental needs of the Election Department in Mizoram. Among the issues discussed was the urgent need to improve the security and infrastructure of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) warehouses across various districts. He mentioned that, as per ECI guidelines, there is a need to enhance the security of these warehouses and requested additional support from the Police Department for this purpose.

He also highlighted the lack of a permanent office building for the Election Department and the operational challenges this has caused. In the absence of a dedicated office space, the department has been functioning from temporary buildings, which has hampered their work and created logistical issues.

Furthermore, Dr. Lalrozama pointed out that the lack of a strong media presence in Mizoram has hindered effective outreach for ECI’s awareness campaigns.

The ECI officials appreciated the efforts of the Mizoram People’s Forum (MPF) in promoting fair and peaceful elections in the state. They also expressed gratitude to the people of Mizoram for consistently conducting elections in a smooth and democratic manner, serving as a model for other states.

The Election Commission of India reaffirmed its commitment to the idea of “One Nation, One Election” and emphasized the importance of collective efforts from the CEO and all election officials to make this vision a reality.

Representatives from the Parliament Secretariat also attended the meeting. Discussions were held regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha election in the state, and all necessary preparations were reviewed to ensure the election is conducted efficiently and fairly.
