DGCA Launches Full-Scale Probe Into Air India AI-171 Crash Near Ahmedabad

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a comprehensive investigation into the crash of Air India Flight AI-171, which went down shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon. The flight, operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner registered as VT-ANB, was en route to London Gatwick Airport when it crashed just outside the airport’s perimeter.

“There is no confirmed cause of the crash at this stage. A detailed inquiry has been initiated, and all relevant agencies have been roped in,” a DGCA spokesperson said. The flight departed from Runway 23 at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 13:39 IST, and within minutes, a Mayday call was issued by the cockpit. However, no further communication was received afterward.

The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a seasoned Air India aviator with over 8,200 flying hours, and First Officer Clive Kundar, who had completed 1,100 hours of flight time. A total of 242 people were on board, including 230 passengers, 10 cabin crew, and two pilots. Eyewitnesses and airport personnel reported seeing thick black smoke billowing from the crash site shortly after impact.

Emergency response teams were dispatched immediately, and rescue efforts remain ongoing. According to the DGCA, the aircraft crashed just outside the airport boundary, suggesting it failed to gain sufficient altitude after takeoff.

DGCA officials are currently at the site collecting crucial evidence including flight data, cockpit voice recordings, and eyewitness accounts. Sources also confirmed that Boeing representatives are expected to join the investigation team and assist with technical analysis.

This crash is one of the most serious aviation disasters in India involving a wide-body aircraft in recent years. Authorities have not yet released an official count of casualties or survivors. While early speculation includes possibilities such as engine failure or flight control malfunction, officials have urged the public and media to avoid drawing conclusions until the investigation is complete.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the aviation sector, reigniting concerns over aircraft safety and operational oversight.
