July 22 to Be Celebrated as “Pure Indigenous Cattle Conservation Day”

Animal Husbandry Minister Pankaja Munde Takes a Key Step for Indigenous Cow Protection

Mumbai – Maharashtra’s Minister for Animal Husbandry, Pankaja Tai Munde, has taken a significant decision in the direction of preserving native cattle breeds. The state government has officially declared that July 22 will be observed every year as “Pure Indigenous Cattle Conservation Day.” An official ordinance to this effect has been issued.

Earlier, the indigenous cow had already been declared as the “State Mother – Gomata.” In line with this recognition, the new decision aims to protect and promote native cow breeds. Maharashtra is home to several indigenous breeds such as Devani and Lalkandhari in Marathwada, Khillar in Western Maharashtra, Dangi in Northern Maharashtra, and Gawalu in Vidarbha. However, due to their comparatively lower milk yield and reproductive capacity, the population of these breeds has been declining steadily, creating an urgent need for their preservation and promotion.

To address this, the government plans to enhance the productivity and quality of indigenous cows using modern technology. It also aims to develop markets for products derived from native cows, such as milk, dung, and urine, thereby supporting sustainable livelihood opportunities for cattle rearers.

Special Activities on July 22

To mark “Pure Indigenous Cattle Conservation Day,” a range of programs will be organized including seminars, workshops, exhibitions, and competitions. The day will be jointly observed by the Commissioner of the Animal Husbandry Department and the Maharashtra Gosamvardhan (Cow Welfare) Commission. The required expenses for the day’s events will be funded through the Cow Welfare Commission’s budget.

Minister Pankaja Munde stated that this initiative is a welcome step for public awareness and preservation of indigenous cattle in the state, and marks a positive move toward safeguarding local breeds.
