Home Minister Reviews Functioning Of Mizoram Police

Aizawl : A review meeting on the functioning of the Mizoram Police was held this afternoon at the DGP Conference Hall, Police Headquarters (PHQ), Khatla. The meeting was chaired by Pu K. Sapdanga, Minister for Home, Government of Mizoram.

Pu Anil Shukla, Director General of Police, delivered a welcome address, while Pu H. Lalengmawia, Chief Secretary-in-charge, and Pu Vanlalmawia, Secretary, Home Department, highlighted the current status and achievements of the Mizoram Police.

In his address, Home Minister K. Sapdanga expressed appreciation for the vital role the police play in maintaining public peace and security. He emphasized the need for disciplined, physically fit, and mentally sound personnel to ensure greater efficiency and reform. He noted that the government had recently launched a recruitment drive to fill 259 constable posts to strengthen the force. He further pointed out that the current vacancy rate in the department stood at 38.9%.

He stated that those who are unable to perform their duties effectively due to various personal or professional challenges should consider Voluntary Retirement, as the department cannot afford inefficiency. He emphasized the importance of implementing Zero-Based Posting to ensure optimal deployment of manpower and encouraged the modernization of training centers to better equip new recruits as well as in-service personnel.

The Home Minister stressed the importance of adapting to the fast-changing global landscape and the rise of digital communication. He urged the Mizoram Police Radio Organisation (MPRO) to be more responsive to public needs and called for the department to work closely with civil society organizations to strengthen law enforcement and community engagement.

He also stressed the need to raise awareness among the public regarding issues like border security, rule of law, civic order, and the reduction of insurgency, pointing out that comprehensive reforms and consistent engagement were vital.

During the session, key milestones of Mizoram Police were highlighted. The first police station in Mizoram was established in 1895. By 1947, six police stations had been sanctioned in Aizawl, Lunglei, Siaha, Kolasib, Champhai, and Tlabung. The 1st Mizoram Armed Police Battalion was set up in 1973.

At present, Mizoram has:

  • 11 Police Districts
  • 3 Armed Police Battalions
  • 5 India Reserve Battalions
  • 1 Police Training School
  • 1 Traffic Unit
  • 1 Security Unit
  • 3 Intelligence Units
  • 1 MPRO Unit

The department has a sanctioned strength of 12,189 posts, of which 7,685 are filled. This includes:

  • 158 Gazetted Officers
  • 2,409 Unarmed Police
  • 4,424 Armed Police
  • 179 Ministerial Staff
  • 23 Stenographers
  • 8 Computer Operators
  • 484 MPRO personnel

The review session also discussed proposals for improving police infrastructure, including:

  • Creation of new Police Sub-Divisions, Police Stations, Outposts, and Beat Posts
  • Expansion of Border Police Stations and Border Outposts
  • Enhancing physical and mental well-being of police personnel

Pi Meenu Choudhary, Additional DGP, along with other senior officers from PHQ and the Home Department, also attended the meeting.
