AYUSH University brings Ayurveda, Unani, and Homeopathy colleges under one regulatory framework in UP

Gorakhpur : The integrated regulation of Ayurveda, Unani, and Homeopathy colleges in Uttar Pradesh has become a reality with the establishment of Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University. Before its inception, these institutions were governed separately by discipline-specific bodies. The foundation of the state’s first AYUSH University was laid four years ago, and now, on July 1, it will be formally inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu.

Following the central government’s initiative to unify traditional medical systems, such as Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy, Yoga, and Naturopathy, under the AYUSH umbrella, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath envisioned a single platform for integrated medical education and regulation in the state. This vision took shape in the form of the Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University, which has been developed over 52 acres in Pipri, Bhathat, approximately 25 kilometers from the Gorakhpur district headquarters. The foundation stone was laid by then-President Ram Nath Kovind on August 28, 2021, at the invitation of the Chief Minister.

The university currently oversees education and treatment in the disciplines of Ayurveda, Unani, and Homoeopathy. Plans are underway to include Yoga, Naturopathy, Siddha, and Sowa-Rigpa in the curriculum shortly. With this centralized system, once fragmented regulation has now become streamlined and unified.

Currently, 98 AYUSH colleges across the state, including 76 Ayurveda, 10 Unani, and 12 Homoeopathy colleges, are affiliated with the university. Since the 2021–22 academic session, the university has been conducting studies and examinations for courses such as BAMS, MD, MS (Ayurveda); BUMS, MD, MS (Unani); and BHMS, MD (Homeopathy).
