Mizoram AH&VETY Minister Inaugurates Hnahthial District Veterinary Hospital
Modern facility set up at a cost of ₹2.35 crore with NABARD support; aims to boost animal healthcare and welfare in the region
Hnahthial : The new District Veterinary Hospital, Laboratory, and Staff Quarters in Hnahthial were officially inaugurated today by Mizoram’s Minister of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary (AH&VETY), Pu C. Lalsawivunga. The ₹2.35 crore project was funded under NABARD’s RIDF-XXVII scheme. Bialtu MLA Pu Jeje Lalpekhlua was also present and expressed gratitude for the support provided.
Speaking at the event, Minister Lalsawivunga emphasized that the hospital is not just a government initiative but a valuable resource for the welfare of the people and their livestock. He highlighted that Hnahthial, despite being one of the smaller districts, has long-awaited such infrastructure, and this facility will now allow better access to animal healthcare.
He noted that livestock, particularly pigs, poultry, and cattle, are vital to the state’s economy and rural livelihood. The government is committed to improving veterinary services and animal husbandry through such projects. The minister also mentioned that a fodder project is being planned in Thenzawl and tenders are currently being floated. Pilot fodder projects will also be launched in various districts to ensure a reliable feed supply for livestock.
Addressing concerns around animal feed, he said that initiatives to enhance pig and cattle feed self-sufficiency are underway. He stressed that it is important to educate the public that livestock farming must be based on proper planning and sustainable practices, not just traditional methods. He also referred to compensation pending under the ASCAD scheme for those who lost pigs due to swine fever and said the matter is being followed up.
MLA Pu Jeje Lalpekhlua, in his remarks, thanked the government and expressed joy that the long-awaited hospital was finally operational in Hnahthial. He highlighted that the district’s recent recognition in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index published by the Ministry of North Eastern Region and NITI Aayog was thanks to the efforts of government staff, NGOs, and community leaders. He called for continued cooperation to maintain the district’s progress.
The newly constructed hospital and laboratory building is 42 feet long and 31 feet wide, consisting of a ground floor and a first floor.

- 1 Recovery/Drip Room
- 1 Examination Room
- 1 Registration Room
- 1 Medicine/Storage Room
- 1 Waiting Area
- 2 Public Toilets
First Floor includes:
- 1 Laboratory
- 1 Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) Room
- 2 Veterinary Officer Rooms
- 1 Computer Room
- 1 Common Toilet
In addition, separate quarters for the Chief Veterinary Officer and Veterinary Officers have also been constructed.
The event was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Pi K. Vanlalruati. Dr. M. Zohmingthangi, Additional Director of AH&VETY, delivered a welcome speech. Dr. T. Lalthanpuia, also an Additional Director, presented a technical report.
The event was attended by AH&VETY officials, Local Monitoring Committee (LMC) members, district-level officers, community leaders, NGO representatives, and members of the Mizoram Journalists’ Association (MJA). Dr. C. Sanghluna, District Veterinary Officer, gave the vote of thanks and officially concluded the ceremony.
