Cutting Edge Technological Devices commissioned at Naihati Depot for expediting Wagon Overhauling.

Naihati Carriage and Wagon (C&W) Depot plays a crucial role in maintaining safety, reliability and efficiency of train operations of Sealdah Division by ensuring faster wagon Routine Over Hauling (ROH). The depot is responsible for the maintenance and repair of Railway carriages and wagons, ensuring they are in good working condition for safe operation.

Installation of cutting-edge technological devices in Railway operations is crucial for improving efficiency, safety, reliability and reducing downtime for trains. It can also optimize resource allocation, minimize delay and improve overall productivity. As a part of that continuous endeavour, Eastern Railways has introduced a few sophisticated automated machines at Naihati Depot as detailed hereunder:  

CTRB Condition Monitoring System – Cartridge Tapered Roller Bearings (CTRB) are used in various rolling stock to reduce friction and ensure smooth operation. During Routine Over Hauling (ROH), CTRB checking is mandatory but most of the depots depend on manual checking which involves human error. With the introduction of new monitoring system at Naihati, human error component will be minimized to a great extent. Getting the condition report in digital format will provide a detailed tracking of failure related issues detected during maintenance. This digital machine will help Railways to necessary upgradation for better and faster maintenance.

Welding Simulator – Indian Railways’ vast fleet depends on various maintenance in which welding is deeply integrated. Efficiency and periodic training of welders is a major challenge to Railways. Welding simulator is a Virtual Reality (VR) based modern machine to develop better welding skills in a controlled environment to replicate the experience of real welding without using any consumables. This machine is cost effective, provides real time feedback and generate reports regarding welding technique including angle, welding speed, arc length etc. This supports training, skill assessment, performance tracking of various welders.

Overhauling of various braking components at Naihati Yard – Naihati depot is a major wagon ROH depot for Sealdah Division. A large no. of special premium rakes are also examined which requires 100% brake power. Because of relentless efforts of the railway employees overhauling of various braking components like SAB, BC, LSD, APM etc. are now being done at Naihati Depot itself which will, in turn, help in reducing dependency on workshops like Liluah & Kanchrapara and will also help to reduce the average wagon detention time for the sake of more effective traffic operation.

Overhauling of Distribution Valve (DV) – Naihati C&W depot examines a large no. of premium rakes which requires 100% brake power. But the supply from feeding depots and workshop is not sufficient to meet the huge demand of this depot during maintenance. Overhauling of Distribution Valve (DV) has also been started at depot level in presence of DRM/Sealdah yesterday to increase yard efficiency and ensure better wagon overhauling.

Adopting aforementioned cutting-edge technologies will definitely embolden Naihati Carriage & Wagon Depot with faster outturn and better accuracy. Augmenting new machines will certainly improve operational efficiency of Sealdah Division by reducing maintenance costs and providing better services to passengers.
