Lunglei Town Recognized with Swachh Survekshan State Award for Cleanliness Excellence

Lunglei – The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, presented the Swachh Survekshan Award 2024–2025 today at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Among the awardees, Lunglei town in Mizoram received a prestigious State Award in the category of ‘Promising Swachh Shehar Award’, making it one of the best-performing towns in the state in terms of cleanliness.

The award was received on behalf of the Mizoram government by Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Minister Pu K. Sapdanga, along with Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC) Vice Chairman Pu K. Lalrinawma, Executive Councillor Pi Lalhruaitluangi Sailo, UD&PA Secretary Pu Lalmalsawma Pachuau, and Director Pu Jacob Lalawmpuia, from the Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal.

The Swachh Survekshan Awards are part of the Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban (SBM-U), under which towns and cities across India are assessed and ranked on multiple parameters related to sanitation and cleanliness. This year marked the 9th edition of the awards, featuring 78 different award categories with updated evaluation criteria based on urban practices and citizen feedback.

Since the inception of the Swachh Survekshan Awards in 2016, Lunglei town has received six awards, including the current recognition. Previous honours include:

• 2019: Best City in Innovation and Best Practices (Northeast Zone)
• 2021: Best City in Citizen Feedback (Population 50,000–1 lakh, Northeast Zone)
• 2022: Clean City (Population 50,000–1 lakh, Northeast Zone)
• 2023: Clean City (Population 50,000–1 lakh, Northeast Zone) and Clean City within Mizoram (Population below 1 lakh)

This continued recognition highlights Lunglei’s commitment to cleanliness, sustainable urban practices, and public participation in the Swachh Bharat Mission.
