CM Devendra Fadnavis: Sant Namdev Maharaj Temple to Be Renovated to Global Standards
675th Sanjeevan Samadhi Mahotsav Celebrated in Pandharpur with Great Reverence
Solapur/Pandharpur: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the Sant Namdev Maharaj Temple in Pandharpur will undergo a complete renovation and that a world-class memorial will be constructed at the site of his Sanjeevan Samadhi. He assured that no shortage of funds would hinder the project and emphasized that Namdev Maharaj’s teachings themselves are his true memorial, which the government is committed to passing on to the younger generation.
The Chief Minister made these remarks while addressing the 675th Sanjeevan Samadhi Celebration of Sant Shiromani Namdev Maharaj, his family, and Sant Janabai Maharaj held in Pandharpur. The event was attended by Guardian Minister Jaykumar Gore, MLAs Samadhan Awatade, Abhijeet Patil, Ranjitsinh Mohite Patil, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Chandrakant Pulkundwar, and Mahesh Dhawale, President of the Shri Namdev Kshatriya Ekasangh.
Spreading Sant Namdev’s Teachings Nationwide
CM Fadnavis highlighted that great saints such as Guru Gobind Singh and Kabir referenced Sant Namdev with deep respect. His thoughts are also found in the verses of Meera Bai and Narsi Mehta. Namdev Maharaj played a critical role in unifying the spiritual fabric of India and made the philosophy of Bhakti universal, crossing language and regional barriers. He inspired future saints like Kabir, Dadu, and Garibdas, making a profound impact on Indian spirituality.
Sant Namdev: The Messenger of Bhakti Across India
Sant Namdev spread the message of Bhagwat Dharma across 22 Indian states, awakening devotion during times of foreign invasions. He stood alongside Sant Dnyaneshwar, who translated the Bhagavad Gita into Marathi, while Namdev provided the philosophical foundation. Their meeting marked a significant confluence of Bhakti thought within the Warkari sect.
Sant Namdev wasn’t just a Warkari; he was a torchbearer of Indian cultural unity. He broke language barriers, crossed regional boundaries, and took devotion across the country, culminating his historic pilgrimage in Pandharpur with a feast that symbolized social equality and togetherness. By establishing Chokhamela’s samadhi inside the Vitthal Temple, he sent the powerful message that greatness is defined by deeds, not birth.
A Pioneer in Indian Literature and Bhakti Poetry
Sant Namdev was the first biographer in Indian history, penning emotional accounts like Sant Dnyaneshwar’s Samadhi and spiritual biographies from Pundalik to Janabai. His works were rich in dialogue, drama, and universal human values. He even composed children’s poetry describing the leelas of Krishna in Marathi.
Interestingly, Marathi Ghazal poetry traces its roots back to him, and he played a crucial role in enriching Hindi literature. Namdev wrote abhangs in Hindi and Punjabi, and was fluent in Braj and Shauraseni languages. He believed that language is a medium of dialogue, not division—a thread of friendship and brotherhood. That’s why 61 of his hymns are included in the Sikh holy scripture, Guru Granth Sahib.
Darshan of Namdev Payeri: A Spiritual Blessing
Calling it a blessed day, the Chief Minister said that visiting the Namdev Payeri (steps) during the 675th Samadhi anniversary was akin to receiving darshan of Lord Pandurang himself. The abhangs of Namdev mention “Payeriche Chire” (stones of the steps), reflecting his deep spiritual sentiments. His Bhagwat Dharma philosophy reached all corners of India even before the Marathas carried Hindavi Swarajya across borders.
Guardian Minister’s Commitment to Development
Guardian Minister Jaykumar Gore affirmed that the government is committed to preserving India’s cultural heritage, strengthening spiritual icons, and ensuring comprehensive development of Pandharpur, including the construction of a grand corridor. The government is also pursuing plans to establish a monument at Sant Namdev’s Samadhi site.
He revealed that the state cabinet has already allocated ₹150 crore for the memorial of Sant Shiromani Savata Maharaj, and urged everyone to unite for a similar grand monument for Sant Namdev Maharaj.
