CSMIA to Redevelop Terminal 1, Jeet Adani Hails Tricolour Display for Independence Day
Mumbai, Aug 2025 – Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airports, said on Wednesday that the sight of the Tricolour evokes “deep pride in every Indian’s heart” and expressed confidence that travellers passing through Mumbai Airport would feel the same.

His remarks came in response to a social media post by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), which announced its 79th Independence Day celebrations. “CSMIA marks India’s 79th Independence Day with dazzling Tricolour illumination at Terminals 1 and 2, complemented by thematic installations that capture the spirit of freedom and unity,” the airport said on X.
The celebration coincides with CSMIA’s announcement of major redevelopment works aimed at creating a next-generation passenger experience. These include the redevelopment of Terminal 1 (T1), capacity expansion, digitalisation, airside enhancements, advanced passenger technology, and strengthened sustainability measures.
Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which operates CSMIA, plans to transform T1 into a modern facility capable of handling 20 million passengers annually—an increase of 42% over current capacity. The redeveloped terminal will have a built-up area exceeding two million square feet and is scheduled for completion in 2028-29. It is envisioned as a hallmark of digital innovation and passenger convenience.
According to CSMIA, Phase 1 of T1’s modernisation will begin in November this year, managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited. Work will be carried out in multiple phases to minimise disruption to operations. The first stage will involve demolition of the existing structure, starting November 2025, followed by construction of the new terminal.
During the redevelopment, CSMIA’s Terminal 2 and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport—expected to commence operations in 2025—will jointly manage passenger traffic and flight schedules, ensuring smooth service continuity.
These projects form part of Adani Airports’ broader vision to cater to the growing demands of Mumbai city and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region while delivering a world-class travel experience for millions of passengers each year.
