Ukraine receives $329M Package for Patriot, Starlink from the United States.

Sept 2025 : The US State Department has cleared over $300 million in potential defence sales to Ukraine to sustain Patriot air defence systems and extend satellite communications for Starlink terminals. The $179.1 million Patriot sustainment package includes software updates, system modifications, and associated modification kits, spare parts, and maintenance support. A total of six Patriot systems are currently operational in Ukraine to defend against ongoing Russian air attacks, with additional units pledged by allies including the US and Germany.

Developed by Raytheon, the Patriot is regarded as one of the world’s most capable air defence systems, able to intercept aircraft as well as cruise and ballistic missiles. “The proposed sale will improve Ukraine’s ability to meet current and future threats by further equipping it to conduct self-defence and regional security missions with a more robust air defence capability”, the Defence Security Cooperation Agency stated. The principal contractors for the potential sale are RTX Corporation and Lockheed Martin.

Meanwhile, the US State Department has also approved a $150-million sale to extend satellite communication services for Ukraine’s Starlink terminals. Developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Starlink terminals provide internet connectivity to hospitals, schools, and emergency services during widespread blackouts in the war-torn country. Beyond humanitarian roles, the system supports battlefield operations such as drone piloting, artillery targeting, and communications.

California-based Starlink Services has been named the principal contractor for the potential sale. The announcements follow the approval of an $825-million sale of 3,350 Extended Range Attack Munition air-launched missiles and associated equipment to Ukraine. The purchase is being funded by Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway, with the US providing a loan. The US State Department’s approvals still require congressional authorisation.

A Starlink terminal is the user-facing dish and router component of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet system, which provides high-speed, low-latency internet by receiving signals from low-Earth orbit satellites and creating a local Wi-Fi network for devices. The terminal features a phased-array antenna that self-points and connects to multiple satellites for uninterrupted connectivity, often even when obstacles like trees or buildings temporarily block the signal.
