Prof Muhammad Yunus to Address UNGA Meeting on Rohingya Crisis
New York, Sept 2025 : Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus is scheduled to attend a high-level plenary meeting at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday night to address the ongoing crisis affecting Rohingya Muslims and other minority communities in Myanmar. The conference aims to identify sustainable solutions, including addressing critical funding gaps.
The meeting will take place at the General Assembly Hall of the UN Headquarters from 8:00 pm (Bangladesh time). According to the Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, representatives from at least 75 countries and organisations, including heads of state and government, have confirmed their participation.
The UN-organised conference seeks to mobilise political support, maintain international attention on the crisis, and review the situation on the ground. It will also focus on addressing the root causes of the crisis, including human rights violations, and propose a concrete, time-bound plan for sustainable resolution.
Key objectives include ensuring the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of displaced Rohingya communities to Myanmar. The conference will provide a platform for countries and organisations to exchange perspectives on the crisis and recommend innovative measures to resolve it effectively.
Prof Yunus will speak during the opening session, highlighting Bangladesh’s concerns and the need for continued international engagement. Turkey will represent the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), while Kuwait will represent the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) at the event.
The high-level meeting reflects a renewed international commitment to resolving the Rohingya crisis, combining political, humanitarian, and developmental efforts. By bringing together global leaders and organisations, the conference aims to sustain focus on this long-standing humanitarian challenge and develop a roadmap for a lasting, peaceful solution.
