Centenary of Puthanpally Basilica: A Towering Legacy of Faith, Charity, and Community

Thrissur, Oct 2025 : The Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours, fondly called Puthanpally (New Church), is set to celebrate its centenary this Sunday with grandeur and devotion. The historic event will bring together political leaders, clergy, and thousands of faithful devotees to honor one of India’s most iconic churches.

Rising 160 feet in height with a bell tower soaring to 260 feet, the Basilica is not only the tallest church in India but also home to one of Asia’s tallest bell towers. Yet, beyond its breathtaking architecture, it is the church’s towering record of charitable works that has left a deep mark on society in Kerala.

The centenary celebrations reflect both faith in action and pride in architectural excellence. Spread across 25,000 square feet, the Gothic-style structure boasts 11 altars, intricate murals, icons, and statues depicting biblical scenes. Inside, the fusion of devotion and artistry creates an atmosphere that leaves visitors awe-struck and fills Keralites with pride.

Speaking to IANS, Rector Father Thomas Kakkassery, who has spearheaded the year-long preparations, highlighted the community’s unwavering commitment.

“The true measure of Puthanpally lies not only in its stone and spire but in the heart of its parishioners,” he said. “Since October 2024, the 590 families of the church have raised nearly Rs 2.5 crore to support education, healthcare, and welfare programs. This remarkable act of charity mirrors the church’s spiritual mission of serving society as towering as its architecture.”

A Century of Faith and Resilience

The story of the Basilica began on October 10, 1925, when Mar Francis Vazhappilly arranged for temporary worship in a nearby school building. The foundation stone was laid on December 21, 1929, but construction faced repeated delays due to global upheavals, including both World Wars. Despite these challenges, the church was consecrated on November 24, 1940.

Over the decades, the Basilica grew in both spiritual and cultural importance. In 1986, it had the honor of receiving Pope John Paul II. A year later, the Perpetual Adoration Centre was inaugurated, followed by the majestic bell tower in 2006. Recognizing its prominence, Pope John Paul II elevated the church to the status of Basilica in 1992.

A Testament to Community Spirit

The centenary is not just a commemoration of architectural brilliance but also of enduring faith and community service. Through its parishioners’ contributions, the Basilica has continued to embody its mission of uplifting lives beyond the walls of worship.

As the centenary celebrations unfold, Puthanpally stands as a towering symbol of resilience, devotion, and compassion. From its soaring Gothic spires to its enduring charitable endeavors, the church proves that greatness is measured not only in height but in the depth of its heart.
