Jashpur Achieves Remarkable Success in the Field of Fish Production
22,805 Metric Tons of Fish Produced in the District Over the Last 22 Months
Farmers’ Income Witnesses Significant Growth
Raipur, Nov 2025 : In the last 22 months, Jashpur district has recorded an impressive 22,805 metric tons of fish production.
Fish production is not only a source of nutritional security but has also become a powerful means of generating large-scale rural employment. To promote fisheries in the state, the government is continuously adopting new innovations. Farmers are being trained in the use of modern techniques and are also being provided financial assistance. With these efforts, fish farming communities are rapidly moving towards self-reliance. Today, Jashpur district is making remarkable progress in the fisheries sector. In the last 22 months, due to effective implementation of various schemes, the district produced 18.50 crore fish spawn, 2.55 crore fish seed (stey fry), and achieved 2.94 crore fish stocking. Altogether, the district recorded a total fish production of 22,805 metric tons.
6,904 Beneficiaries Covered Under Fishermen Accident Insurance Scheme
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai, and through effective implementation of government policies and schemes, 77.677 hectares of rural ponds and 295.270 hectares of reservoirs have been allotted on lease to promote fish farming at the rural level. Additionally, eight fishermen cooperative societies have been sanctioned financial assistance under a new government scheme. For social security of fishermen, 6,904 beneficiaries have been covered under the Fishermen Accident Insurance Scheme.
55 Units Established in the Shrimp Farming Sector
A total of 63 beneficiaries belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have been supported for fish seed rearing in seasonal ponds. Additionally, 817 beneficiaries from the General and Scheduled Tribe categories have undertaken stocking operations after purchasing fingerlings at a 50 percent subsidy. A total of 430 beneficiaries from the General and SC/ST categories have received boats and nets, while 227 beneficiaries have been provided financial assistance under the Retail Fish Marketing Scheme. Similarly, the establishment of 55 units in the shrimp farming sector has brought diversification to the fisheries industry.
Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana Strengthens the Rural Economy
The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is an ambitious scheme launched with the aim of creating a “Blue Revolution” in the fisheries sector. Its key objectives include increasing fish production in the country, doubling fish exports, and generating large-scale employment opportunities. The scheme empowers fishermen and fish farmers by providing essential facilities, modern equipment, and financial assistance. Under this scheme, beneficiaries involved in fisheries receive insurance coverage in cases of accidental death, permanent disability, or hospitalization. Loans with subsidies are also provided to help people start fish farming as a business.
Subsidies Provided to Fish Farmers
Under PMMSY, beneficiaries are provided subsidies for constructing ponds, renovating tanks, and building pond liners on their own land. Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and women beneficiaries receive up to 60 percent subsidy, while beneficiaries from the General and Other Backward Classes receive up to 40 percent. Under this scheme, the district has approved pond construction on 41 hectares of private land, renovation ponds on 7.6 hectares, and 11 biofloc pond liner units. Additionally, 162 beneficiaries have received assistance under the Saving-cum-Relief Scheme.
