PM Modi, German Chancellor Merz Hold “Wonderful” Meeting, Reinforce Expanding India–Germany Partnership

Johannesburg, Nov 2025 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday described his meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz as “wonderful,” noting that the India–Germany partnership continues to strengthen across multiple strategic and economic domains, including trade, technology and innovation.

PM Modi shared a brief update on X, emphasising the positive trajectory of bilateral relations. “It was wonderful to meet German Chancellor Mr Friedrich Merz. India’s ties with Germany are robust, especially in areas such as trade, technology, innovation and more,” he wrote.

Although the Ministry of External Affairs has yet to release detailed readouts of the interaction, the Prime Minister’s remarks indicate that both leaders reviewed the progress of ongoing cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing collaboration in priority sectors.

The meeting comes at a time when India and Germany are deepening engagement through well-established bilateral frameworks such as the Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC), the India–Germany High Technology Partnership, and joint initiatives supporting digital transformation and green industrial development. Germany remains one of India’s largest trading partners within the European Union and is a leading contributor of investment, engineering capabilities and technological expertise.

Chancellor Merz, who assumed office earlier this year, has highlighted the importance of strengthening relations with key Indo-Pacific partners. India and Germany have maintained consistent high-level exchanges through platforms like the G20 and G7, alongside regular discussions on climate action, resilient supply chains, skill development, sustainable mobility and migration cooperation.

Both sides have also made significant progress in emerging and future-oriented sectors. Collaboration is expanding in renewable energy, green hydrogen, semiconductor technology, advanced manufacturing and climate-friendly industrial solutions—areas identified by both governments as essential for long-term strategic and economic alignment. Germany has supported India’s clean energy transition through major development partnerships and continues to back New Delhi’s sustainability and climate commitments.

Defence manufacturing, cyber security, vocational education, digital governance and academic exchanges form additional pillars of cooperation, with both governments placing strong emphasis on innovation-led growth and knowledge partnerships.

India and Germany share a strategic partnership of over two decades, shaped by shared democratic values, a commitment to multilateral reform, and cooperation on global issues ranging from climate governance to maintaining a rules-based international order.

Saturday’s meeting further reinforces this continuity. PM Modi’s message signals India’s intent to work closely with the Merz government as both countries push forward on a modern, technology-driven and future-ready partnership that supports mutual economic growth and global stability.
