Hong Kong, Nov 2025 :A devastating fire swept through the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Tai Po on Wednesday, leaving at least 68 people dead and 100 injured, according to the Hong Kong Police Force’s briefing on Thursday. The tragedy, one of the deadliest residential fires in recent years, has plunged the city into shock and grief while prompting an extensive, multi-agency emergency response.

Authorities confirmed that three men have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the blaze. While details regarding their possible involvement remain under investigation, the police stated that the arrests were made based on preliminary evidence gathered at the scene.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee addressed the public in the early hours of Thursday, stating that the fire—after hours of relentless effort by emergency responders—had been brought largely under control. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the unfolding humanitarian crisis. Lee reported that about 279 residents of Wang Fuk Court remain unaccounted for, and rescue teams are working urgently to verify their whereabouts.

According to Lee, firefighters have managed to extinguish visible flames in three of the eight buildings that make up Wang Fuk Court, while four others continue to exhibit sporadic flare-ups. He assured the public that the government had mobilized all available resources, directing departments to focus on extinguishing the fire, rescuing those still trapped, administering medical care to the injured, and providing comprehensive support to affected families. A full investigation into the incident has also been ordered.

The fire was first reported around 2:51 p.m. on Wednesday. Due to its rapidly intensifying spread, the Fire Services Department escalated it to a No. 5 alarm fire at 6:22 p.m., indicating the highest level of emergency response. The blaze spread at alarming speed, engulfing seven of the eight residential buildings in the complex. Rescue operations continued late into the night as firefighters battled the flames and searched for survivors.

Hospitals across Hong Kong have activated the Major Incident Control Centre to handle the influx of patients. Twenty-nine injured individuals remain hospitalised, including seven who are in critical condition. Medical teams are working around the clock to stabilise victims suffering from severe burns, smoke inhalation, and other injuries sustained in the chaos.

Emergency measures have extended beyond rescue and medical care. The Education Bureau deployed educational psychologists and support staff to temporary shelters to assist affected students and families. Several schools in the Tai Po district suspended classes on Thursday to ensure the safety and emotional well-being of students.

At shelters, personnel from the Home Affairs Department, Civil Aid Service, Care Teams, and the Police Force coordinated to provide food, supplies, counseling, and logistical support. Community solidarity was evident as organisations and residents stepped up with voluntary donations. Tai Po district councillor and Care Team member Lam Yick Kuen noted the heartening response, saying the compassion shown by citizens reflects Hong Kong’s resilience in times of crisis.

As midnight approached, acts of individual goodwill were also visible. One resident, identified only as Ho, was seen transporting a small cart filled with bottled water to the scene, offering drinks to exhausted firefighters and emergency workers. Sweating heavily, he moved through the crowd repeatedly asking if anyone needed help—a quiet but powerful gesture amid tragedy.

With rescue efforts continuing, authorities warn that the death toll may rise. The city remains on high alert as teams comb through the damaged structures, hoping to bring survivors to safety and provide closure to grieving families.
