Washington Shooting: Trump Calls Attack on National Guardsmen an “Act of Terror,” Blames Biden Administration
Washington, Nov 2025 : Hours after two National Guardsmen were critically injured in a shooting incident in downtown Washington, US President Donald Trump labeled the attack as an “act of terror,” calling it a crime against the nation and humanity.
Speaking to the nation on Wednesday evening (local time), Trump described the assault as “an act of evil and an act of hatred” and emphasized the severity of the attack. He identified the suspect in custody as a foreign national from Afghanistan and criticized the Biden administration for permitting the individual to enter the United States under refugee status.
“The suspect is a foreigner who entered our country from Afghanistan, a hellhole on earth,” Trump stated. “We must now re-examine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden. Any individual who does not love or add value to our country must be removed immediately.”
US media outlets have identified the alleged shooter as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who arrived in the United States in 2021.
In response to the incident, Trump also announced the deployment of an additional 500 troops to bolster security in Washington. The shooting occurred less than 500 meters from the White House. Trump was not in the city at the time, as he was visiting Florida for the Thanksgiving holiday.
The two National Guard members, deployed from West Virginia, remain in critical condition. Earlier on Wednesday, Trump took to X (formerly Twitter), writing: “The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded and now in separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price. God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!”
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser described the incident as a “targeted shooting,” highlighting its deliberate nature.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the case would be prosecuted at the federal level, stating, “This is an assault on federal law enforcement officers.”
The attack comes amid a significant National Guard presence in Washington. Currently, approximately 2,400 troops are deployed in the city, including 958 from the DC National Guard and around 1,300 from eight other states. In recent months, Guard personnel have been sent to Washington and several major cities nationwide as part of Trump’s public safety and security measures.
The incident has renewed discussions about the vetting of Afghan refugees admitted under the Biden administration, while also emphasizing the ongoing security challenges faced by federal law enforcement personnel in the nation’s capital.
