Washington Shooting: Obama, Harris Condemn Attack.
Washington, Nov 2025 : Former US President Barack Obama and former Vice President Kamala Harris condemned the shooting of two National Guardsmen in downtown Washington, calling the attack unacceptable and offering prayers for the injured servicemembers and their families.
In a post on X, Obama stated, “Violence has no place in America. Michelle and I are praying for the servicemembers shot in Washington, DC today, and send our love to their families as they enter this holiday season under the most tragic of circumstances.”
Kamala Harris echoed the sentiments, saying, “Doug and I send our prayers to the two National Guardsmen who were shot earlier today in Washington, to their families, and to the communities that love them. Violence of any kind is unacceptable, and we all, together, must condemn this tragedy.”
The attack has drawn national attention as President Donald Trump labeled it an “act of terror” in a Wednesday evening address (local time). He described the shooting as “an act of evil and an act of hatred, and an act of terror. It was a crime against our entire nation. It was a crime against humanity.”
Trump identified the suspect in custody as an Afghan national who entered the United States in 2021, and criticized the Biden administration for allowing the individual to enter the country under refugee status. “We must now re-examine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden, and we must take all necessary measures to ensure the removal of any alien from any country who does not belong here, or add benefit to our country. If they can’t love our country, we don’t want them,” he added.
The president also announced the deployment of an additional 500 troops to Washington to “help protect our capital city.” The shooting occurred less than 500 meters from the White House, though Trump was not in the city at the time, visiting Florida for the Thanksgiving holiday.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the case would be prosecuted at the federal level, emphasizing, “This is an assault on federal law enforcement officers.”
The incident comes amid an expanded National Guard presence in Washington, part of a broader public-safety operation initiated under Trump. Currently, approximately 2,400 Guard personnel are deployed in the capital, including 958 from the DC National Guard and around 1,300 from eight other states.
Authorities have not yet released additional details about the suspect or the circumstances of the shooting. The two injured Guardsmen remain in critical condition.
The incident has reignited discussions about security measures in the nation’s capital and the vetting of foreign nationals entering the United States under refugee programs. National leaders across the political spectrum have emphasized the importance of unity and support for law enforcement in the wake of the attack.
The shooting has also prompted heightened alerts in Washington and several other major US cities, as Guard units continue to support federal law enforcement in ensuring public safety during the holiday period.
