Fortis Hospital Mulund Helps Injured Couple Rebuild Life After Odisha Aircraft Crash
Mumbai, Jan 2026 : Fortis Hospital Mulund, Mumbai, has successfully treated a middle-aged couple who sustained severe and complex injuries in a road accident near Rourkela in Odisha on January 20, 2026. After days of comprehensive trauma care, the couple, Mr. Sunil Agarwal and Mrs. Sabita Agarwal, were discharged in stable condition and safely transported back to their hometown of Bhubaneswar via an air ambulance.
The Agarwals were travelling with family members when their vehicle was involved in a serious collision. Of the six occupants, two passengers—husband and wife, both aged 49—suffered multiple, life-threatening injuries. Due to the severity and complexity of their condition, immediate specialised care was required. After initial stabilisation at Rourkela, the couple was transferred to Mumbai for advanced trauma management.
Mr. Sunil Agarwal sustained a Grade IV splenic injury along with multiple other internal injuries. He underwent an Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement Surgery at Fortis Hospital Mulund. Following detailed evaluation and surgical intervention, his condition stabilised. A multi-disciplinary trauma team managed his recovery, ensuring close monitoring and coordinated treatment.
Mrs. Sabita Agarwal was diagnosed with a spinal fracture. She was immediately assessed by the trauma team led by Dr. Sachin Bhosale. Her care involved a collaborative approach, including spine specialist Dr. Vikas Gupta, Senior Consultant – Spine Surgery. Conservative management was adopted, focusing on stabilisation, pain control, and gradual recovery.
The hospital’s trauma care model ensured round-the-clock monitoring and swift intervention. Within 30 minutes of arrival, both patients were triaged and stabilised. Their treatment involved coordinated efforts from doctors, nurses, anaesthetists, administrators, and support staff, enabling a smooth and effective recovery process.
In the days following surgery, both patients showed steady improvement. Pain was well controlled, mobility gradually improved, and they received continuous physiotherapy, psychological support, nutritional counselling, and trauma care. No post-surgical complications were reported, allowing for a safe discharge.
Speaking about the outcome, Dr. Vishal Berri, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Mulund, said the couple’s recovery was remarkable. “They are stable and ready to continue recovery at home. It is especially heartening that they can now be with their family,” he said.
Although not fully recovered, both patients are expected to make a complete recovery with continued follow-up care in Bhubaneswar.
