New Delhi, Aug 2026 : India’s logistics ecosystem is undergoing a major technology-driven transformation, with the Logistics Data Bank (LDB) achieving the milestone of tracking 10 crore EXIM containers. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the achievement highlights the growing role of technology in making the movement of goods faster, simpler and more efficient.
Goyal said a modern and efficient logistics network would be critical to strengthening India’s manufacturing sector, improving the competitiveness of domestic businesses and expanding the country’s presence in international markets.
“The tracking of 10 crore containers through the Logistics Data Bank is an important milestone in India’s logistics journey. Technology is helping us make logistics simpler, faster and more efficient, while improving the competitiveness of Indian industry,” Goyal said.
He added that efficient logistics would be central to strengthening manufacturing, boosting exports and advancing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat.
The Logistics Data Bank provides end-to-end visibility of Export-Import (EXIM) container movements across the country using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based tracking technology. The platform currently provides visibility into virtually the entire EXIM container movement in India.
Its extensive network covers 19 ports and 32 container terminals, besides 103 Inland Container Depots (ICDs), 439 Container Freight Stations (CFSs), empty yards, parking plazas and industrial zones.
The system also connects 89 manufacturing Special Economic Zones (SEZs), 5,569 railway stations, 269 toll plazas and three Integrated Check Posts, creating a broad digital network for monitoring cargo movement across multiple modes of transport.
The LDB allows exporters, importers, logistics companies and government agencies to track containers throughout their journey. By providing real-time and historical information, the platform helps stakeholders monitor cargo movement and identify delays or bottlenecks in the supply chain.
It also generates valuable analytics on dwell time, transit time, port performance and terminal efficiency. Such data can help logistics operators and policymakers identify areas requiring improvement and take corrective measures to reduce delays and costs.
The government believes that improving logistics efficiency is particularly important as India seeks to strengthen its manufacturing base and become a larger participant in global supply chains. Faster cargo movement can reduce logistics costs, improve delivery timelines and make Indian products more competitive internationally.
A significant upgrade to the system came in September 2025, when Goyal launched LDB 2.0. The upgraded platform expanded the capabilities of the original system and introduced several features aimed at providing greater visibility across the international and domestic logistics chain.
One of the key additions was high-seas tracking of export containers, enabling stakeholders to monitor shipments even after they leave Indian ports. LDB 2.0 also introduced enhanced multimodal shipment visibility, allowing users to obtain a more comprehensive picture of cargo movement across different transportation networks.
The milestone of 10 crore containers reflects the scale at which digital technology is being integrated into India’s logistics infrastructure. By bringing different stakeholders onto a common visibility platform, the LDB is helping create a more transparent and data-driven logistics ecosystem.
As India continues to expand manufacturing and exports, such digital infrastructure is expected to play an increasingly important role in reducing inefficiencies and strengthening supply-chain resilience. The government’s focus is now on using technology and data to further streamline cargo movement and support businesses operating across domestic and international markets.
