New Delhi, September 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday remembered the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States on the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, expressing solidarity with the families whose lives were permanently altered by the devastating attacks.
In a message posted on social media platform X, Modi paid tribute to those who lost their lives and reiterated India's commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms.
“25 years on from the horrific 9/11 attacks, we remember and honour the victims and stand in solidarity with the families whose lives were forever changed,” the Prime Minister said.
He noted that terrorism has claimed countless lives across the world and highlighted India's long-standing experience with the threat.
“As a victim of cross-border terrorism, India has been at the forefront of this fight for several decades,” Modi said, adding that although the nature of the terrorist threat continues to evolve, India's determination to oppose terrorism remains firm.
“While the threat keeps evolving, our resolve and opposition to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remain unwavering. We stand in solidarity with all efforts to combat this scourge,” he said.
Modi also shared photographs and glimpses from his visit to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York in 2014, recalling the significance of the site dedicated to the victims.
The 25th anniversary of the attacks is being observed across the United States with memorial ceremonies and events honouring those who died. Wreath-laying ceremonies, flag displays, moments of silence, vigils and readings of victims' names are being held at various locations. Volunteer initiatives have also been organised as part of commemorations.
For many Americans, the anniversary is also an occasion for personal reflection and remembrance. Schools and educational institutions are using the milestone to help younger generations understand the events of September 11, 2001, and their far-reaching consequences.
On that morning, four commercial aircraft were hijacked by al-Qaida extremists in a coordinated terrorist operation. Two of the planes were deliberately crashed into New York City's World Trade Centre, striking the Twin Towers, which subsequently collapsed.
A third aircraft was flown into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense, near Washington, D.C. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew members confronted the hijackers and attempted to regain control of the aircraft.
The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people and became one of the defining tragedies of the 21st century. They also triggered profound geopolitical and security consequences, including prolonged military operations and conflicts far beyond US borders.
The Twin Towers, among the world's tallest buildings at the time and powerful symbols of American economic strength, were destroyed in the attacks. The Pentagon was also severely damaged.
Twenty-five years later, the September 11 attacks continue to shape discussions on terrorism, international security and counter-terrorism cooperation.
Modi's message on the anniversary underlined India's continued opposition to terrorism and its solidarity with victims and families affected by terrorist violence worldwide.
