New Delhi, Sep 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday surprised commuters, including schoolchildren, when he boarded a Delhi Metro coach and travelled with them to Delhi University, where he was scheduled to address students of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) as part of its centenary celebrations.
The Prime Minister’s approximately 20-minute journey, which took place around 7 p.m., saw him interact freely with passengers. He shook hands with several schoolchildren and spoke to students and women travelling in the coach. Images and videos of the journey quickly surfaced on social media, showing the Prime Minister engaging with commuters in an informal setting.
Visuals showed Modi entering the Metro station and using a travel card at the ticketing gate before boarding a train on the Yellow Line bound for Vishwavidyalaya Metro station. During the journey, he was seen speaking with students of different age groups. One young boy seated beside the Prime Minister was seen whispering something into his ear before shaking hands with him.
Modi’s latest Metro journey is part of his repeated use of public transport during important public engagements. In 2023, he travelled by Delhi Metro to reach Delhi University for the university’s centenary celebrations. In 2015, he used the Metro to travel to Faridabad to inaugurate the extension of the Delhi Metro line. More recently, in February 2026, he travelled on the Meerut Metro and alighted at Meerut South station.
Addressing students at SRCC, Modi spoke about India’s economic transformation and highlighted several achievements of the country in recent years. He referred to the growth in defence exports, the government’s efforts to eliminate Naxalism and major infrastructure achievements, including the construction of the new Parliament building. He also recalled India’s efforts in combating the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Prime Minister said he believes in setting ambitious goals for the country and working relentlessly to accomplish them. He also criticised what he described as a regressive and anarchist mindset, reiterating his use of the phrase “Dimagi Naxal” while referring to such tendencies.
During his address, Modi highlighted the contributions of several prominent alumni of SRCC and described the occasion as historic. “I am the sixth player,” he said, underlining the significance of the centenary celebrations for the institution and the wider education sector.
Paying tribute to SRCC founder and noted industrialist and philanthropist Sir Shri Ram, the Prime Minister said institutions that survive for a century accumulate a wealth of achievements and experiences.
He noted that generations of students associated with SRCC have contributed to the country’s progress, making the college’s centenary not merely a celebration of its past but also an occasion to reflect on its continuing role in shaping India’s future.
