SpaceX to Invest $100 Billion in Louisiana Spaceport

New Delhi, Aug 2026 : Elon Musk-led SpaceX is set to invest $100 billion to establish a large-scale launch facility in Louisiana, a project expected to create more than 11,100 direct and indirect jobs in the state over the next decade, according to the Louisiana Economic Development agency.

The facility, named Starbase Louisiana, will be developed in Vermilion Parish and is planned as a high-frequency launch site for SpaceX’s next-generation Starship spacecraft.

The project is expected to significantly expand the company’s launch infrastructure and increase the frequency of Starship missions. SpaceX said the facility would provide the infrastructure needed to support future high-cadence launches and expand access to space.

Musk said on X that the site would eventually feature more than a dozen launch towers, potentially enabling over 30 Starship flights a day. He described the planned development as the largest launch site on Earth.

“SpaceX makes sci-fi real,” Musk said while sharing the company’s announcement on the social media platform.

According to Louisiana Economic Development, the facility is being designed to support thousands of launches annually. The development is expected to strengthen the state’s aerospace sector while creating new economic opportunities across the wider Acadiana region.

The project is projected to create approximately 3,000 direct jobs over the next 10 years. The average annual salary for these positions is expected to be around $92,600, which is about 192 per cent higher than the average wage in Vermilion Parish.

In addition to the direct employment opportunities, the project is expected to generate more than 8,100 indirect jobs through construction, manufacturing, transportation, logistics, services and other associated economic activities.

Together, the direct and indirect employment generated by the project could create more than 11,100 new job opportunities across the Acadiana region over the coming decade.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry welcomed the investment, calling it a major milestone for the state. He said the project would reinforce Louisiana’s growing position in the aerospace and advanced technology sectors.

The planned facility will play an important role in SpaceX’s efforts to develop a high-cadence launch system for Starship. The spacecraft is being developed for a wide range of missions, including large-scale transportation, satellite deployment and future exploration missions.

SpaceX has been expanding its infrastructure as it works to make Starship capable of frequent and increasingly complex missions. The company envisions the spacecraft as a key platform for future space transportation and exploration.

The Louisiana project would add another major launch location to SpaceX’s expanding network and provide additional capacity for Starship operations.

The proposed investment also highlights the growing economic importance of the commercial space industry, with large-scale launch infrastructure increasingly linked to manufacturing, engineering, technology and high-skilled employment.

If completed as planned, Starbase Louisiana could become one of the world's largest and busiest space launch facilities, while giving Louisiana a major new role in the future of commercial spaceflight.
