Aizawl, September 2026 : The North East Regional Muaythai Championship 2026, organised by the Muaythai Association of Mizoram (MAM), was inaugurated today at R. Dengthuama Hall, Salem Veng Mualpui, Aizawl, with Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar attending as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, the Sports Minister said Muaythai is among the fastest-growing sports disciplines in the present era. He expressed hope that the championship would provide a platform for Muaythai enthusiasts from across the Northeast to come together and would give a major boost to the development of the sport in Mizoram.
He also encouraged young athletes from Mizoram to continue pursuing the sport with dedication and determination, and extended his best wishes to the participants.
The championship will continue until September 24 and has attracted a large number of male and female Muaythai fighters from different northeastern states.
At the inaugural function, General Secretary of the Muaythai Association of Mizoram, Vanlalawmpuia, delivered the welcome address, while Association President Johny Ngurthansanga also addressed the gathering. Members of the Muaythai Association of Meghalaya conducted a Muaythai demonstration during the event.
Mizoram has a strong record in Muaythai at the national and international levels. The state hosted the 11th National Muaythai Championship in 2010, where its team emerged as champions.
Mizoram athletes have also won two gold, four silver and six bronze medals at the World Championships. At the Asian Championships, the state has secured two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
The state currently also has three International Referees and Judges in Muaythai, reflecting Mizoram’s growing contribution to the sport beyond competition and into international officiating.
