Toronto, Aug 2026 : Poland’s seventh-seeded star Iga Swiatek captured the Canadian Open 2026 women’s singles title after producing a commanding straight-sets victory over second seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.
Swiatek defeated Rybakina 6-2, 6-3 in the final to secure her first title of the 2026 season. The victory provides a significant boost to the Polish star ahead of the US Open and underlines her return to winning form on hard courts.
Swiatek dominated the final from the opening stages, combining powerful groundstrokes with excellent defensive play to keep Rybakina under constant pressure. The Kazakh player, known for her powerful serve and aggressive baseline game, struggled to find consistency and committed several unforced errors at crucial moments.
The Polish seventh seed handled Rybakina’s pace effectively and dictated rallies with accurate returns and deep groundstrokes. Swiatek also showed composure on important points, saving key break opportunities and converting her own chances to establish control over the contest.

Shelton secured his second ATP Masters 1000 title and his fourth tournament victory of the 2026 season. His earlier triumphs came in Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart.
The Montreal victory takes Shelton’s career tally to seven tour-level titles and further strengthens his position as one of the leading American players on the ATP Tour.
Shelton controlled the opening set with aggressive serving and powerful baseline tennis before Nakashima mounted a stronger challenge in the second. However, Shelton maintained his composure in the tiebreak to complete the victory.
With both champions heading into the closing stages of the season with renewed confidence, the Canadian Open has provided an important platform ahead of the US Open, where Swiatek and Shelton will look to carry their winning momentum into the final Grand Slam of the year.
